Here's the situation... I'm 45, and have gray hair and it is a bit wavy, I'd like to grow out to at least shoulder length, but I'd like to get a picture to show my wife what it might look like and figure out how to get it to grow out looking nice along the way... any ideas?
I don't have a picture to show you, but think of Michael Landon or Richard Gere (there are many web sights devoted to these two, with pictures). Landon was a longhair, and had fantastic hair shoulder-length, and when he didn't dye it brown, it was gray. Gere has had long hair several times between his movies (and sometimes in his movies). Both had/have wavy hair and both looked great. Long, wavy hair does take some work (I know, I have long wavy hair, and am also in my forties), but it's a look that is worth it -- when kept well it can get lots of compliments. Make sure you get a very good stylist (preferably one without a huge ego) and tell him/her EXACTLY what you want and WHAT YOU DON'T WANT and bring pictures. And if they don't respect your wishes, don't go back,
Good luck!
That is a problem for us 40+ with greying hair. Not many "models" our age on long-hair websites.
My only remedy at this point is to go though the different galleries (start with Victor's) and find a style that fits and imagine it greyer.
If you find any site that models greying longhairs, let us know.
45 is not old. I'm 47 and have found that with short hair
people think I look too young.
Just wanted to tell you you are not alone (or old, heck this is the prime of life!), I'm 45 and my wife asked me to grow my hair long.
It's been a long time since college, but hey...I've got the hair, a lot of my friends don't, I'm doing it!
Think the last real haircut I had was in May/Apr., then a slight trim in June for my cousin's wedding. It is now at the real difficult stage, to me. My wife says it looks just fine...don't worry.
If your hair has any wave to it, as mine does, don't expect to get thru this looking like you want to all the time. But others might not view it as bad as you do, it's a change.
I guess for a lot, it depends on the job, I so far haven't had that problem, tho maybe will. I really like letting it grow longer and being a little distinctive.
GL to you.
Growing it out is no problem... just don't give in to the urge to walk into a shop where clippers or scissors are around. :-) Keeping it looking nice while it is growing out.... well that can be a challenge. I used every trick in the book, but it still looked pretty shabby. BTW... I am going to be 47 in 10 days and after looking at the galleries that Victor has posted, I would venture to say that I have longer hair than most listed. It is between mid-back and waist length. And if you literally can't stand the gray, there is always a lighter colored demi-permanent color that will eventually wash out and give you highlights in the meantime. Try it, you might like it!

All I can say is,I'd be happy to start a web page for older long haired men (preferably single LOL)... for us older females that only like long hair on guys! My girlfriend Lisa runs longhairedmen.com but the age tends to be 20-30. I don't think it proper for me to chase guys more than 10 years younger but geez.... long hair is the only way to go. :)
I publish a rock/metal zine even tho I am an old lady so its nice to see many of the older rockers hanging on to their hair, if they can LOL.

Thanks for encouragement.. I have great hair and I am going to go for a longer look - the micheal landon look is what I will show my wife -- she was a great HWY2HVN fan. I have a mustache so the look is not quite the same. I am 45 and I missed the long hair movement is the 70's as I was a jock and the long hair did not fit into the coaches view of acceptable hair. I went a little longer after getting that first job. For those of you you are having employment problems with long hair, find the right company - as long as safety is not an issue - our company - even in customer interface positions accepts long hair - as long as it is neat - NO Piercings allowed though (ears excepted).
All for now... Jim
