I was just over at Bill & Larry's house yesterday, and arrived with what was left over of a new hair-style I tried out from the day before, which Larry was kind enough to take a picture of. I've decided to give it the name, "The Tornado"... OK, so it doesn't exactly hold itself all that "securely" together... And yes, I admit it might look a tad bit, "flamboyant" walking around like this in public (lol).... But hey, it IS at least, "original", don't you think?
Thanks, Larry, for taking this pic!
- Ken in San Francisco
Hi Ken,
I have to say that I like both the style, and your name of your style as well, it IS original! As for your mane, it IS awesome, still as blonde as ever, and it HAS grown since your December update! I am SURE looking forward to meeting you and ALL the "San Francisco gang" in 2009!
Take care,
David
Thanks, David, --- and since you are the first to reply, that means that you must officially be the first MLHH member to be hit by my tornado! I hope to God you don't live in a trailer park, though... Blonde tornados can just devastate brunettes there, you know (lol)!!
Thanks again for you nice words, David!
- Ken (who's just swirling by...)
Being as Illinois is originally my home state, a land well-known to have plenty of thunderstorms as well as occasional tornados, I can now pay tribute to my midwest roots by wearing their most threatening weather dangling from my head! This is a side-view of an Illinois hair-tornado, --- a catagory 3, I think... Thank God I don't come from Kansas, or my hair would have to be Catagory 5!!
But, now that I live in California (and have for a long, long time), I guess that means my next hair-style I invent has to be... "The Earthquake"??
I just wish I could patent these hair-styles, --- I could make mega-$$$!!!!
- Ken
With all the natural disasters California has annually you will have new styles throughout the year! Let's see, you could do the Smokey Bear, the Slide, the Inferno, the Frizz, the Monsoon, the . . . . . . . . .
Hair looks great, Ken. Any have you lost a little weight? Looking trim there!
George
Big George. Most afraid of the Inferno. Don't think
I'll try that one.
peace, jonalbear
Why, YES, --- I never even thought of all those hair-style possibilities (lol)!! WOW.... "The California Landslide Doo"; "The Santa Anna Wind Inferno Blow-dryer"; "The Maverick's Killer Storm Wave"; "The Russian River Flood Overspill"; "The L A Temblor Ponytail"; "The San Andreas Fault Disaster"; "The Great San Francisco Shake & Bake Head-banger"; "The Golden Gate Bridge Suspension Braid"; "The Yosemite Hair Waterfall"; "The Mt. Shasta Top-knot Bun"... I could go on & on!!!
Thanks, George, but.... umm.... er... I'm just WEARING BLACK!
Many thanks anyway, though, George!
- Ken
Sleep on a damp bun and the Tornado would hold together pretty well. Put the water in a fancy bottle and include a bun clip and you've got yourself a product. Soup up the names a little- "Tornado in a Bottle" spray and the world famous "Ken Clip" and you're ready for your own plaid pants-clad infomercial teaching all of us how to do the Tornado.
"So easy you can style your hair in your sleep! But wait, there's more. Act now to purchase this deluxe Tornado styling kit and you also get the styling DVD starring Ken himself for no extra cost."
Elizbeth, marketing advisor to Gourley Industries
What next, a vertical roll :P
Lol!! Yes, but you being a hair-stylist, you could probably invent one better than I could... Hey, wait a minute... that means you might get to patent your invention, and be the one to make the mega-money instead of ME! Hmmmm... I should have kept my "tornado" a big secret from the hyperboard, me thinks (lol)!
- Ken
That really does look like a tornado Ken, what was the style before you untied it?
Anyway looks like your hair is in superb condition despite the tornado.
Its hurricane season soon isn't it?
Cheers Dave
As far as hair-styles go, ANY season is, "Hurricane Season!" Why wait for June to begin, when you can swirl your mane around into a giant vortex any time of the year the mood strikes ya? Just imagine a GIANT "Princess Leah" bun in back of one's head... now there's a frightening thought (lol)!!
- Ken
Ken, Cool new style. Attached is mine that a friend dubbed "Tsunami". Anybody else have any stormy styles?
peace, jonalbear
WOW, jonalbear, I never dreamed our manes could be so destructive (lol)!! "Tsunami", eh? Well, it most certainly does look like it's headed fast for land at a very high speed... I'll warn the others to hurry up and get to higher ground; but, not "too" high, --- I hear "The Avalanche" is next!
- Ken
Hi Ken. Nice new hair style, but when are we going to see pictures of you doing the twist or a double hammerlock while sporting this new creation. By the way, did you see Pasha's West Coast Swing on "So You Think You Can Dance" last week? It was great. The music didn't say West Coast Swing to me, but the routine was great.
Del
Hey del, nice to hear from you! No, unfortunately I didn't get to see that; but I'll check in with my Ballroom teacher, because she video tapes that show... BTW, I know a guy named, "Pasha", --- a light-skinned Black guy in his 40s I believe, who sings as well as is a regualr C&W dancer here in SF... Does that even remotely describe the Pasha guy on TV? ...Just curious!
On another topic: I'm hoping to make it to this year's "Boogie by the Bay" Swing Dance Convention this year. It's always on Columbus Day weekend, --- have you ever been?
- Ken
Hi Ken. The Pasha on "So You Think You Can Dance," is a 27 year old Russian man. He's a great International Style Latin dancer. He did a cha-cha the week before that was incredible.
The swing convention that you mentioned sounds like fun, but I have never been to it. In October, I'll be competiting with three of my students at the New Jersey State Open Championships at the Meadowlands Sheraton. It's usually a fun competition and I have two 16 year old girls that are incredible that will be entering Theatre Arts categories (lifts and tricks etc.). One will be doing a Tango where she is in the air more than on the ground ( at least that is what it feels like to me) and the other will be doing a Jive and a Rumba that is really steamy.
Keep on Dancin' and tossin' that hair.
Del
That looks cool Ken! And also you hair looks alot longer than in the older pics you've posted:)
Simon
Thanks, Simon! And as far as hair length goes, when my hair is wet, it easily touches my belt: but when dry, it tends to spring back up and still rest above the beltline (unless I tilt my head back, --- which is "cheating" - lol)....
Take care, --- and thanks again!
- Ken
Do you think some sort of hair stiffening product might hold it. Garnier makes a line of unisex hair products used for stiffening hair so you can hold in spikes or seperate it into chunks. Got2B and Loreal Studio Line have similar products.
I thought of a name that might fit for you guys going through the awkward 'poofy' stage. The Mushroom Cloud.
Carol
Hey Carol..
- LOL I resemble that comment!!!
Tristan
Don't worry, Tristan: we've all been there... Just never heard it described in quite the way that Carol has so cleverly worded it (lol)!!
- Ken
Hey Ken..
It used to really bother me ... now I just poke humor at it.. I don't have any inclination to cut it whatsoever ... probably due in part to this community..
Peace..
Tristan
Oh yes... especially after a good shampooing and letting it air dry ... the morning after is quite entertaining! lol
Tristan
Good one, Carol (lol)!! YES, I hear that there are several versions of that style hitting the high-fashion runways in New York, Milan, and Paris now, --- even as we speak!
- Ken
Hey Ken
Actually, I rather like it! (But then, I always like things on the original side.) It almost appears to be a Twist-Braid with the braid not starting from the bottom of the hair line.
Hmmmmmmm............perhaps we add the name of this style to the Braid List? Really,it looks neat!
Justin~
Thanks, Justin! Actually, it's not a braid at all: it comes out best when my hair is still damp... All I do is twist it around and around and around and around in the same direction, then let it hang that way to dry. Sometimes I have to re-do it; but it's still most effective when my hair still has a little dampness left in it.
This pic was taken the morning AFTER I had done a really awesome "tornado"; but, since I was on my way over to Bill & Larry's house that morning, I thought it would be fun to see if I could re-group the "tornado", so I could show Bill essentially what it looks like, --- had my hair been freshly-washed that very day of the pic, it would have looked even better (and been even more "destructive" - lol)!!
- Ken
Wow! Never knew that! I always thought it was the earthquakes!
LOL. Joking aside, I love the style, Ken. It looks marvelous. Quite original. It seems like some sort of a twist braid or something. haha. Well, Ken Hopefully you get the hang of the camera and share some more cool pictures with us.
Take care
Hey Chris... if you want to keep up with the latest earthquakes in California, check out this site. It's real time. As soon as there's a quake, it'll probably be on here in about 2 minutes...

Hey man, Thanks for the link! According to the map, There were 3 earthquakes during the last hour! Whoa!
And i thought I had it bad with the damn hurricanes.......
I live in San Jose and it's interesting to see all of the tremors around this area. Glad you like the link!
--Rick
Hi Ken! So you had dinner with Bill as he left the chat last night for that get together.Well hope you all had a fun evening.Anyway thats a cool "twist" of a longhair style! Please pardon the pun.LOL.Certainly different that the usual array of braids mostly done as well as standard fare ponytails.Maybe you should get that patented since you did invent it!Looks very cool though and you certainly wear it well. Thanks for showing it to us board users. Now you'll have to top that one next time and think of a cool name for it too.The pressures on!LOL.Mark
Lookin' good, Ken! Now... if you could just find some way to keep it like that. I got it... don't move! :)
--Rick
Definitely an original. Let me guess first we pick you up by your hair then spin you round? LOL I think we'll want a video of that.
It does look cool and not too flamboyant besides you live in SF lots of original people there.
