Currently growing hair. How long is the bad hair phase and how did you deal with it (slick it back?, hats?, just leave it?) Just wondering thanks.
How long, you ask, does the bad hair phase last? Answer: FOREVER!! (or at least it seems so at the time - lol)
And how do we deal with it???
Answer: "all of the above" that you just listed; plus even MORE, --- gel, hairspray, bandanas, half-tails... "whatever gets you through the night" (or, in the case of awkward-phase, hair, "whatever gets you through the DAY")!!

Lol, I've always found this phase weird. First, it depends on your hairtype and second, it depends on whether you find it awkward or not. I personally don't have any trouble having hair in front of my eyes lol or stuck somewhere, actually those are signs that it's growing.
But anyway, probably it starts 2 or 3 months after you stopped cutting it and it last about a year mostly.
Young E, Gel, hats(at work)and a good year seemed
to do the trick for me.

It'll probably last until you can put all your hair in a ponytail. . .I can put mine in a ponytail now, but sometimes it still does the awkward look. I have really curly hair though. Straight hair will take a bit less, probably.
For me the whole journey was fun because I chose to make it that way. None of this trying to make things look tame in the awkward stage or covering all with a hat. Just a different look everyday. So, I just left it to grow. (One slight trim at the 2 year mark for split-ends.)
It really takes about 3 years for all to settle down so as to be consistant. The 2 year mark is a good one...........but the "flips" still continue.
I've only been growing for about 4 months now, so i guess i'm in the bad phase. Sometimes i slick all my hair straight back with the help of some gel or pomade, but recently i've just started to side part, my bangs are touching my eyebrows so i'm not bothered by them just yet.
I really don't remember having one...or maybe I still am in it. I never had/don't have a problem with bangs in my eyes, mouth, or hair tickling my ears etc. It was all new feelings that came with the longer hair. So just deal with it is my advice.

The awkward phase(s) and how long it will last is affected by length, texture, thickness, weather and many other factors.
Use whatever you NEED: slick it back, use bobby pins (well hidden) etc.
Good Luck!
It lasts a while (a year's what I heard), but what mostly makes it bearable are your surroundings, supportive parents and friends make the bad phase fly by, and don't worry, it _will_ get better.
Keep on doing what you're doing,
