for it to be healthy :P
that's kinda hard to say. back in the day, i used to comb my hair a bit obsessively. now i hardly ever comb it unless i'm styling it. and honestly, there hasn't been any change in my hair's healthiness. it's still full and shiny with little breakage or split ends and reaches past my waist. so i would say once a day is enough (maybe before bed being a good time) to comb the natural oils through the hair and let it do it's job.
peace,
nic
I guess i have some sort of hair OCD going on because i'm combing it rather often actually, especially on the day i've just washed it, i really have to stop doing that.

Well, technically, hair is dead, so there's really nothing you can do to improve its health. Brushing, however, at least once a day, distributes your hair's natural oil, giving your hair the appearance of looking healthy. Brushing also helps prevent knots from forming over time.
Same here (well, in toilet rooms anyway), and also, I make a point of combing my hair when I come in from outside. Windblown hair looks fine to people in the outdoors, but indoors, people expect "neater".
