Gunhill Road
Back When My Hair Was Short (US #40 - 1973
Kama Sutra 569 - 2:40
Gunhill Road was a rock trio consisting of Glen Leopold, Gil Roman, and Steven Goldrich. They apparently took their band name from an actual street in Bronx, NY called "Gun Hill Road".
Gunhill Road recorded three albums for different labels in the early 1970's. The second of these albums contained a song called "Back When My Hair Was Short". The song had heavy drug references and the album sank without a trace. The song was re-recorded with tamer lyrics for the AM radio market in 1973 and that is the hit version presented here.
This single song - produced by Kenny Rogers - is a band's entire legacy. They had no other chart hits, and this is their only song that survives in print, on several compilation sets. "Back When My Hair Was Short" holds the distinction of being top 10 in more different cities at more different times than any record in 1973, though nationally it barely squeaked into the top 40.

Duhhh...I forgot the link.
Here it is.
That's certainly an obscure song. I have it on an old Ktel LP from the 1970s. Thanks for bringing back the memory!

Another good one. I actually heard this one on the radio not too long ago. I hate to call something from 1973 an "oldie" but that was the type station it was on.
Until next week...
I've never heard any of these great songs before. I look forward to these posts every week, Stormy. Thanks for #6.
I'm happy to share them, and glad you're enjoying the series.
