I'm posting my concerns about combing hair when it's wet. (eg. after shower) Is it really damaging to your hair? I mean, when I shower I towel dry my hair for less than 5 mins. I then comb my wet hair in any style I want and leave it to dry in that style.
So anyway, lately, (after searching this board) I've stopped combing my hair and let it air dry for an hour 1/2 sometimes since that's when my hair is COMPLETELY dry. Only then do I comb it but my hair looks really frizzy and ugly when I let it dry without 'wet combing' and the real problem is that when I comb it when dry I get into a LOT of tangles, especially in the hair at the back and my hair starts falling as a result. :S
I only have that problem when I let it to dry AFTER a shower, but since I wash my hair once every 3 days, the next 2 days of combing are easy and comfortable.
So, I really want to 'resume' combing my hair when it's wet but more gently. Does anyone recommend that? Awkward stage is a *****.... :-/
Brushing wet hair is definitely bad but I don't see anything wrong with combing it while it is wet. I always comb mine when it is wet. While showering, I condition my hair(Except for the scalp) and comb it then afterwards I rinse off the conditioner. In other words, De-tangle it. Once I'm drying up I pat my head a few times with the towel to get rid of the excess water. Afterwards, I comb it once again to make sure there aren't any tangles. Then, Just let it air dry. Just make sure to use a wide-toothed comb and you'll be all right.
Cool. I use a comb, not a brush.
Thanks!
Well from my experience, doing anything with my hair at all while its wet pulls out more than it ever would when its dry. Maybe it's because I have a low quality comb, I don't know. But even finger combing pulls out a lot of her.
This could however be something on an individual level, and not necessarily an occurence that can be generalised, so I'd say try both, and estimate how much hair is pulled out when wet or dry, and make your own decisions from there.
Yea thats true. I guess hair type plays a big part.
I can't comb or brush my hair too well when its dry because my ends are very curly. At first I could because my hair seemed wavy but as it got longer, It got curlier.
...be sure to comb out your hair before you shower. That'll save some snagging as you comb out afterwards.

go buy yourself a decent wide tooth wooden comb. use that to comb the conditioner through your hair. after you rinse it out, sqeeze excess water out, then use a towel to sqeeze as much more water out as possible. don't twist or rub with the towel, just sqeeze. then just use your fingers to seperate the hairs out and fluff it. you'll find you have much less tangles to deal with, and it will dry faster.

Ha! You just solved a question I have had. I got a really wonderful spa kit in a wood bucket with wood-handled tools in, as a gift from a dot.com that since went belly-up. I could figure out the shampoo brush, nail brush, body brush, etc. But I never knew what that wide wooden comb was for. I didn't like it for combing my dry hair, as it is thicker than a plastic comb. So I guess it is meant for applying conditioner. And looking at it, it would makes sense, with it's thick teeth to hold the conditioner to as you comb your hair. During the dot.com boom of the internet, before the milennium, you could get the most incredible freebies just for registering at some web site. I sure miss those days (sigh)

I always brush my hair before showering, comb it while its wet, when I put conditioner in, and after I put conditioner in, then after I dry my hair I comb it again to make sure its not tangled. After my hair dries I brush it...
