if you have dandruff and you use dandruff shampoo does it mess up hair growth or damage it? just wondering haha
Dandruff shampoo in itself is a very strong shampoo. It won't slow growth rates but it MIGHT damage hair a bit.
Make sure though that you really do have dandruff. I always thought I had dandruff but then I found out it was some sort of scalp disorder which is apparently what most people have when they think they actually have dandruff.
If you have that scalp disorder, then it has something to do with your scalp being too dry, I can't remember what it's called. But in any case, using dandruff shampoo will only dry it out and make things worse. So make sure you really do have dandruff. Dandruff in itself is not dry, but actually greasy, so that may be an indication.
i don't recommend using anything chemically based. invest in a good tea tree oil shampoo/conditioner. let each of them soak into the scalp for a couple of minutes after being massaged in. it may tingle a bit when it's rinsed out, which is normal. tea tree oil is good for clearing up a variety of skin ailments (acne, rosacea, etc.), so whether it's dandruff or something else it should help. use it two to three times a week at first, then cut back to once a week as the condition clears up. other washings throught the week, use your normal shampoo/conditioner. hope this helps you out! it worked wonders for me and a few members of my family.
peace,
nic
I don't think it'll slow your hairs growth rate or damage it. Just make sure to use it appropriately. Anti-Dandruff shampoo should NOT be used daily. I use to suffer from dandruff until I got my hands on some Tea Tree oil. Tea Tree oil is excellent for dandruff and scalp disorders. Their is a Tea Tree shampoo/conditioner by Paul Mitchell that works wonders. You should try that instead.
-awesome dude thanks for the tip- :)
Thanks for the link. I never knew Amazon sold shampoo. I think I'll try some of this. My scalp's been very icky lately, and the vinegar rinse and dandruff shampoo hasn't done jack so far.
If it works, you're my hero!
I'll post a full review in several weeks.
I am certain it will work. It worked for me and we seem to have a similar hair type so I'm pretty sure it'll work for you.
I know this isn't the response you were looking for, but I've suffered from a flaky, itchy scalp to some extent for my entire life. Now that my hair is longer, it isn't nearly as much of a problem, although some days it is a bummer. Nothing I've ever tried has completely cured the problem (even after visiting a dermatologist). You just gotta roll with the punches dude. Take care.
Mark, the tea tree oil NATURAL shampoo, per Chris H's recommendation is, indeeeeed, a good place to start. Tea tree oil has not only been proven to rid one of unsightly dander, it is ALSO able to clear up other skin conditions, including ringworm, which is a fungus, not an actual worm.
Otherwise, a good PHARMACEUTICAL shampoo, Selsun Blue, does much the same. Active ingredient? Why, selenium, a mineral, known for its restorative properties even as an oral supplement (the tablet, not the shampoo).
Too wordy already,

Many years ago when I used to shampoo, anti dandruff shampoo actually made my head itch and it seemed to get worse. Now I don't put any man-made products in my hair, and the only problem I sometimes get is my hair wants to naturally 'dred' itself, but i quite like that anyway!!
Mark, I have found dandruff shampoos to be very harsh without much result. I would avoid them. A thorough rinse and a good brush out works wonders I've found.

Im not expert on this subject, but since im not using any shampoo at all to wash hairs, WO is my thing, i found good way to get rid of dandruff (for good).
Apple Cider Vinegar, yes - sounds gross, but it works. 1/6 of apple-cider-vinegar and 5/6 of water. Wash your hairs, then apply the mixture to head and make tower wrap around your head and just leave it for 5-10 minutes and then rinse (and wash if you feel like it).
I did that two times in one week, and now i dont have dandruff anymore (some say ones is enough, i had bad dandruff so it took two times).
And no, your hairs wont smell bad, it might smell a little before its dry, just rinse good (the vinegar will make your hair feel soft too, well at least it makes my blond hair feel nice =) )
All the best
