Welcome aboard, Guy Kindell.
To answer your questions, I think your healthy-looking hair is growing in at a normal rate, considering you had a 'fat' cutting trim.
I can no tsay for certain whether your hair will stay looking healthy or not, though because, based on you picture, I believe you are straightening your hair, yes? While it can be done successfully, I'm sure, I know that I have two mixed-race sisters, only one of whom has regularly straightened her hair for years. She is not the sister with gorgeous, healthy, lower back length ringlets. In fact, haircuts for removing split/dry/damaged ends is required frequently.
IF you are straightening, do so at your your risk.
If long, healthy hair is your goal, there is nothing wrong with a big, curly akward stage. I am only now starting to see the light at the end off mine. (Though I have been wearing my hair in a pony for a couple months now (with a little gel to catch the fly-aways from springing up on me).
Best of luck and welcome!
