See, I am not doing this for purely teen angst "fast weight loss" reasons. It is merely something that I have been researching for a while (a year or so), and would like to actually do it after all of my practicing. I am mainly doing it for the detoxification reasons.
However, I hardly ever see a discussion on hair.
If I take daily multi-vitamins, will my hair be okay if I were to fast for 7 to 10 days? Thank you, and please don't try to break down my view on fasting with views that are no concern of mine, to be blunt.
Once again, thank you.
I fast every month, its fun. I don't take a vitamin and my hair seems to be fine. I'm assuming the growth goes down to almost nothing.
Your hair seems to be fine, but its growth is stunted?
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not sure if the growth is stunted, I'm assuming it is though, the growth of my nails also goes down to almost nothing, but its hard to tell with your hair, because it grows so slowly anyhow (apx. 1/2 mm a day).
Protein in a diet is good for hair so the absence of it could make a difference but if you fast for a week to ten days you'll be fine.
You said you'll be taking vitamins which is good as well you may wish to read up on symptoms of vitamin deficiency so you know what to watch for. Some vitamins are better absorbed in food than as a pill I'm no expert but I know that much.
As for my view I think it's cool good luck.
Kevin
Thanks. It is something I have been planning to do for a while, now.
I would check into fasting while taking vitamins. Some, such as vitamin A, on an empty stomach may upset your stomach. I would definitely take some form of protein because your body will start scavenging protein from your muscles due to lack of food intake.

Hm. Protein pills, eh? I'll see if I can find any.
i don't know what kind of a fast you are doing, but i fast twice a year. i do a liquid fast, still high in protein (i can't do an 'eat and drink nothing' fast because i have low blood sugar). i haven't noticed any changes in my hair when i've done them, and i've been doing them for years.
please remember that the summer is the worst time on your body to do a fast, so maybe consider waiting until the fall. it's very easy to get badly dehydrated doing a fast within summer months. i tend do one in the spring and one in the fall.
peace,
nic
I'm doing a water fast.
Also, I heard it was best to do a water fast in summer, due to a person not having to burn calories for the cold weather in order to stay warm?
you said you're doing this for detoxification purposes, yes? that's the reason i do them. i started doing them back in high school, and did a ton of research before i started. your best bet for detoxing is to go with some sort of juice fast. that way you get plenty of water, but you still get enough minerals to not deplete your immune system. throwing some protien powder in a glass of juice each day is good, also. as long as you go with pure juices, you will get all of the detoxing benefits without harming your body any further or weakening your body and getting sick.
i don't know where you live, but if you're in a dry climate it can be dangerous to do a fast in the summer months. i live in phoenix, and i'm not about to do a fast at this time of year, monsoons or not. even though the body doesn't need to burn calories to stay warm in the summer, it still needs to be able to create it's own 'air-conditioning' to keep cool, which also takes nutrients.
Hm. What kind of juice would you recommend? And what brand of that juice?
anything all natural. get a variety of different fruit and vegetable juices. i go to trader joes, whole foods, or wild oats and stock up on a bunch before i start. just make sure it's only juice, nothing added, and not pasteurized or homogenized. if you have a juicer and can make your own, that's even better.
Nah, fasting ain't gonna be dangerous to your hair. It's not likely. I'm only concerned that, IF as ya say it's for detoxing reasons, that you'll re-experience the things you're getting rid of as they're re-metabolised from hiding in your tissues and cast out (out, demon, out!) of your bloodstream through the simple process of elimination, that's all.

Been fasting now on and off for, oh, about thirty years. Always keep those nutrient-enriched health food shakes around, though. Supplementation is key. Following a regimen w/ a nutritionist's supervision would be a plus. Aaaand, often times, when we're hungry, it's actually the bod's way of callin' to be re-hydrated, too. So, be sure to keep plenty of water around besides the health shakes, which ought to be made fresh in the blender, not that gross canned garbage..
