Hi everyone,
I'm 16 years old, living in the UK, and I'd quite like to grow my hair long. It's already reasonably long, in that it covers my eyes when I push it down, but I think I'm going through the "bad-hair phase". My hair's brown, quite thick and straight, although it's started to curl a bit around the ears.
The problem I have is that my mum and sister aren't the most encouraging of people and they're pressurizing me into having a hair cut, with the option of either have it cut short or do something to it so it doesn't look so flat until it's longer.
I'm not sure if you've ever seen Northern Exposure but they keep on using Chris-in-the-morning off that as an example of what they mean.
I have nothing against this idea but I'm not sure how's best to go about it. What do you use to hold it back? I've tried using Fudge's Matte Hed to hold it back but I don't like the feel of it; it's too solid and when ever I touch my hair my hand feels sticky after.
I can't do anything too extreme because I've got to go back to school in a few months and they're pretty strict with their rules but other people have got away with worse.
If you could help or suggest anything it would be great thanks.
Hi, That looks like John Corbett to me. I forgot he was on Northern Exposure. He was in other stuff too like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and others. His hair always looks like that medium length style.
My guess is that he has layers cut in. Also it looks like he blow drys it with some mousse in it to maintain the shape.
If you grow your hair for about 1.5 years with no cuts, it actually should look like this with natural layers on its own.
Don't let the family pressure yu by giving you options that are both distasteful. Tell them you like your hair like it is. However, learning to style your hair while not damaging it is the key to pulling this off. I always hear about this bad hair phase, but at each phase, you can make it look reasonably good without sacrificing your hair's health later on. Non-alcohol gels, sprays, and mousses used in moderation can help you out. Blow dryer on cool setting.
Try a little bit of L'Oreal melting gel worked through wet hair then air dryed first and see what you get. Also, if you don't like it flat, you can get root volumizing sprays that lift up the hair.
Also, ask mum and sis for styling tips that don't involve cutting.

Yeah, it is John Corbett. Thanks for telling me how you think he gets that effect - can try to use that to make my mum back off a bit hopefully!
I have tried telling them that I'm happy with how it is but it doesn't seem to work. Thanks for the suggestions though, I'll give them a go!
