so awhile back there were some hair care tips in my local paper. the only one that i hadn't heard before was this:
'to prevent chlorine damage to hair from swimming, soak hair in regular water first. this way, the hair doesn't absorb as much chlorine while swimming and doesn't get so dried out.'
i don't know if anyone else has ever heard it before, but i gave it a go. for the last month i've wet my hair before jumping in the pool, and it seems to work. i swim quite a bit, and my hair hasn't become straw-like, as it has in years past. in fact, i quit using a leave-in conditioner after swimming.
another tip (if your hair is long enough) is to put it up in as high a bun as possible while swimming during daylight hours. that way there isn't so much color fading.
just thought i'd share!
peace,
nic
Thanks for the tips Nic. I see you have taken measures to protect your potential pigtails. We all gotta protect our hair so that we can have magnificent pigtails.
potential pigtails? man, my pigtails would make you cry with jealousy. :) i'll have to see if i can dig up a photo somewhere...
Well, at the point of prevention you are obviously not sporting your pigtails because you suggest a high bun. And so, at the point of prevention, the pigtails are potential...
But, please do dig up a picture. I do ever so much love cute girls in pigtails! And with you being a cute girl with "pigtails that would make [me] cry with jealousy" you should definitely demonstrate your pigtail goodness...

Hey nic: Yes, I swim a lot also and always soak my hair in fresh water too. Maybe that's why the sign says: All swimmers must shower before entering the pool." Or is is, "Please don't pee in the pool." lol. Seriously, it makes sense that the hair would absorb the fresh water first. That would work for salt water as well, though I don't usually swim/surf where there's outdoor showers.
Peace...Out! Bruce'ster
Yup this would seem to follow. I have noticed since I started taking a thorough shower in the changerooms before getting in the water my hair is nowhere near as dry as it used to get when I used to go a few years ago and just jumped in.
I quite like the bleaching effect though so although not a lot of good for competitive swimming, I don't tie it back while I'm in the water.
Cheers!
