Okay so as many of you know the hair at the back of my head is greatly shorter than the rest. What I am not noticing is that my bangs and side hair are all nice and straight and most importantly they feel nice to the touch. The hair at the back still being relatively short curls up (wings) but thats normal but what is not is that it feels terrible. Its dry and coarse and is making me decide weather to trim it or not. I know that in doing so I will need to trim the bangs and sides as well because I am not fond of the mullet look. The one question which I have is will this about inch of dryness at the very ends stay secluded to the ends so that in a years time I will still only need to the trim the same amount of hair or will I be looking at a full back of ruined hair? This is my fist time growing out my hair and I don't want to ruin it...so far its been a breeze and this could be a defining moment for me.
All advice is welcomed.

I'm no expert, but it sounds as though, if you were to trim a "dry inch" off the ends now, a year from now the last inch might very well be dry again, and you'd be in the same situation. I'd say take care of the hair you have now (condition liberally, don't over-shampoo, etc.), keep away from scissors, and just stay the course for another 12 months. At that point, you'll probably have enough overall length that, if a slight trim were necessary, you wouldn't "be looking at a full back of ruined hair," as you put it.
Just to comment: You can't "mend" split ends. Once it's split, it's split. You can temporarily coat it with oils to make it feel/look nicer...but in the end, it's still a split end.
If it feels dry and seems split, you might want a small trim. I had the same problem, and a dusting trim later, the ends are nice and not dry at all.
Use plenty of conditioner and let it stay on the hair for about 3 minutes. Then use a product like Bed Head "Ego Boost". Ego Boost will help to mend the split ends. Split ends is one of the main reasons that hair looks frizzy.

Seeing your last update, I think your hair is ok. You might get a different feel at the back of your head compared to your sides because the hair is curled and the sides are straight. That'll make it seem like a different texture or feel dry when it actually isn't. But if you really think it is dry then try some beneficial oil treatment. Validus is right, if you cut what you think is dry now, you'll return to the same dilemma again and again.
Good luck,
Bruce
I'm pretty sure that they are not split just curled so that may explain the dry feeling. I'll do my best to wait it out, I've noticed that the inch of dryness is only the very lowest hairs which from what i have read do not reach a terminal length. So the rest of the hair will eventually overgrow these dry ones.
