Hello all,
Okay...I guess I am going to ask a longly debated question. Will wearing a basecall style hat cause any forms of hair loss ? I was just courious. I do tend to put on a hat when I am running fire and ambuance calls, just to keep my hair out of my eyes.
Hi Matt,
I was just reading a article in a haircare magazine at "Regis" (haircare/salon) the other day, and it said their was no evidence of hats causing premature hair loss. This article was a study of 100 highway patrol men from around the US. I hope this answers your question.
Roger
I often times wear a hat to protect my hair from the wind or sun. I think that wearing a hat will help ypur hair, not hurt it.
It is true that hats are not likely to CAUSE hair loss. They will increase the rate of hair loss in people who are prone to losing their hair anyway (most men). There are two things that increase the rate of hair loss: 1) a genetic pre-disposition for hair loss (increased levels of androgens in the oil around the hair follicle caused by an alpha reductase enzyme)--this is the most important; 2) tension on the hair. This tension can be cause by sheer length, combing/brusing and by anything that pulls the hair (like a hat). This is the reason you commonly see men with long hair developing frontal baldness pre-maturely--especially when the hair is worn in a ponytail. The tension on the front of the hair when it's pulled back into a clasp causes the hair to fall out faster than it is being replaced when there is a pre-disposition toward baldness. The solution for this group of men is frequent (daily) shampooing to remove the androgen containing oils and short hair (or some way to prevent the increased tension--I've never figured out how to do it!).
