I have longed all my life to have long hair but always fought parents and the fear of others not liking it. Please give me your opinion of what you think long hair would look like on me and what style I should aim for. I am always afraid that my face is too large to have long hair. I want it bad enough to taste it though.
Please help!
Allen M.
Hi Allen, It's your decision, don't worry what others think cuz it's a waste of emotion on your part fretting over being accepted by others on your appearance. If a longer hair style is what you truly want, you will feel it in your soul. You almost have to develop an attitude towards naysayers that try to mold you to their expectations.
As far as knowing what you would look like, I would say that a longer hair style would probably look great on you. But then I think that way about most longer hair styles on dudes. (Hmm, No I am not gay) Lol :) Anyways, if you are determined and patient the journey of growing your hair out should be very rewarding.
Just stay away from scissors for at least a year or so to give it a chance and see how you like it.
Chris
Ignor them! It's your head.
It'll look great!
I'm biased of course and you'll get the same answer for everyone here, I think long hair compliments everybody's look.
If you want that bad then you're destined to do it! Just let it grow!
Bruce
Greetings Allen M.,
If you really want to commit to growing your hair, well brother, then, this is the place on the information superhighway for EXACTLY that kind of support. Thank you for posting. I, myself, was a skinhead 20 years ago, though not the fascist kind, please. And since then, well, look at my photo (pet dog asleep in the background, her name's Embla) I'm fifty years old, a Neo-Con (sorry my liberal friends!) and an artist, writer, singer.
Go figure! My wife, Inwe, a Liberal, can't understand it. Good luck and total support in growing your haaar long, Allen. Once again, this is the place to be. Peace, man.
Saoirse agus Anam!
Quenyan
Come here often, Allen.
Hey Quenyan, I know this is a bit off-topic but I have a question for you. In America, are politics pretty much spread out between Liberals and Neocons? Or are there any other major groups? What are the main differences? And I don't mean the theory, I mean in practice, what have Neocons done and what have Liberals done over the last 50 years or so?
I'm genuinely interested because I always split up the political system in America into Democrats and Republicans, pretty much oblivious to Neocons and Liberals...
Thanks.
The party affiliation is antiquated and should be abolished.
It does not work as it was intended 200 years ago.
Basically it boils down to people that are for the peoples well being or against the peoples well being. The infighting between the parties generally is detrimental to the well being of the peoples and is an obstacle in serving Americans needs.I consider myself an independant looking at all the facts first rather than following a party that tells me what I should believe and how I should act.
I consider myself an independant looking at all the facts first rather than following a party that tells me what I should believe and how I should act.
As I said (wrote . . . typed!), that's an excellent question. In Italy, a Parliamentary-run government, there are twelve prominently represented parties. Here in the Colonies, though, the distinction betwixt the G.O.P. (Grand Old Party, the Republicans), represented by an elephant as their mascot, and the Democrats, far more progressive and hence thought to be liberal, a kicking, braying donkey THEIR mascot, becomes increasingly blurred. You will hear references to the Demopublicans and the Republicrats, a snide commentary on the very lessening of any real distinction between the two.
It is, I'm afraid, always a matter of casting one's ballot for the lesser of two evils. I was an anarchist. Not the black-trench-coated dynamite throwing kind, the Mikhail Bakunin and Emma Goldman kind. Problem was neighbors. I'm a capitalist. I BELIEVE in a strong economic basis for a society. Sadly enough our (us United Statesians') health insurance and medical coverage is the most notoriously worse in any modernday country.
I'm going to bail out of this conversation now, Mr. Derf26. I'm clearly out of my element, talking conservativism and politics when I see how flawed the System actually is. Just keep the hair healthy and growin'! I certainly will.
Thank you for posting.
Quenyan

Thanks for the answer Quenyan.
The thing is, I'm much, MUCH less naive than you think when it comes to politics. I understand perfectly well that the two party system in the US is really a one party system, with the same, or at least similar people behind both parties. When one party screws up, the people choose the other, thinking much will change. Sometimes it did (yay for Roosevelt) but by and large, things stay the same.
The only confusion I had was with the terminology, and I wasn't sure what the difference between a Conservative and a NeoCon were, but I suppose it all boils down to good leaders and bad leaders. Corruption or the lack thereof. It hardly matters what political system you have. A fool can ruin a Democracy and make the worst of Capitalism, and a genius can excel in Communism (as an example). The simple fact is that there are far more fools than geniuses.
Democracies pay for this by electing incompetents, dictatorships have to suffer the consequences of despots. Eitherway, human beings haven't found a way to maintain any country, empire, or society in a stable state for more than a few centuries. Empires rise, become corrupt, lazy, etc. and then they crumble. "The northern winds made the Vikings" comes to mind.
Now seems to be the time that most of the civilized world is crumbling. I wouldn't want to directly liken the situation to what happened with the Roman Empire starting with the second century AD, as it may seem politically incorrect, but read "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and the semblances will seem all too obvious. The difference being that back then brute force was master; while now lying and brainwashing is so much easier.
And in case any of you are feeling we're in a much worse state than anyone else, and that todays generation, and not yesterdays are the most problematic, I quote you an Assyrian tablet from 2800 BCE - "The Earth is degenerating today. Bribery and corruption abound. Children no longer obey their parents, every man wants to write a book, and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching."

I'm happy to see such interest in the American political system. To spare the rest of the board, I can explain it more thoroughly via e-mail if you would like. I'm a political science major, so it's always my cup of tea to discuss this kind of stuff. =)
-James
Sure, that would be good. I'll e-mail you some questions that might even be a bit controversial, and almost impossible to answer, but I'm sure that (if you find the time) you'll have lots of fun :P
Scrap that, the e-mail system doesn't seem to be working, and is giving me an error, saying my letter isn't in the usual format or something. Damn, and I just wrote up 400+ words of questions lol.
Is there a word limit of some sort?
Hmm... well, just send an e-mail to jraymond45@hotmail.com and I'll get it. =) Look forward to hearing from you!
-James
All e-mail systems have some limit, but that system's would not balk at 400 words, even if they were long German ones. [grin]
Perhaps you misspelled your e-mail address? The system does check it against site records to assure the sender is known here. This keeps us all from getting spammed.
I just checked the system by sending mail to myself and it seems to be fine. That is the easy way to test it - send mail to yourself. Try your message again that way and do let me know if it doesn't go through.

Well I just sent myself a mail and it went through, so I have no idea what was wrong :S
In any case, it doesn't matter since I've sent him the mail directly now.
Could it have been some sort of temporary server issue? Sometimes when I post a message on the board, I get a notification saying I've posted over the limit (even if it's my first post of the day), but then I hit refresh and it works :S
We have different techniques to keep spammers out of various parts of the site. The e-mailing system requires known senders. The board does not require e-mails so it uses other methods. Posts are sorted into three groups:
How long you sit on the posting form is one way the system senses whether you are a human or not. If you try to post immediately, the robot sensor is going to say "get real". If you try to post dozens of times this afternoon, the robot sensor is going to do likewise. Real people take time to type in their responses and they don't respond dozens of times. We have additional sensors in place; those are just two obvious examples.
The robot rejection notice is vague on purpose, so it does not list the exact reason a post was rejected. If it were read by programmers of spam robots, it would give them clues as to what was "wrong" with their attempt to gain access to the system.
Bill
That's a well designed system, thanks for the info :)
I think long hair could work. You may need to eventually go with a pulled back look like a ponytail but definitely think some style somehow will work. You see, long hair is interesting because it does not work like plopping hair on a head to see how it works. Somehow the man and the hair are agreater than the sum of the parts and that is how it works. Also, the dynamic nature of long hair is part of it and so how the hair flows and moves is critical.
Think of it like this: If you want long hair but you aren't growing it because of peer pressure, then you're not yourself. You're slowly becoming like the people who's pressure you don't like so much.
If you want long hair, go for it, and good luck :) This forum should give you all the advice and support you may need.
Do the parents opinions still matter? Do others opinions matter? Does YOUR opinion matter? Do YOU want it badly enough, that you don't care what the rents, and others think? Enough that your willing to take the risk, and overcome the fear of it not 'looking right' on you? The only one who can answer the question of doing it, is you. And the only way you will really know is to to take the plunge and go for it. If it's not for you, at least it is something you can easily change.
But if you have been having strong feelings for sometime, chances are you can succeed, and overcome the negative obstacles that get in the way. Stick around, and I guarantee you will get lot's of encouragement HERE, even if you don't get it elsewhere. I think you will look just fine, but I'm biased because I like guys with HAIR on their heads, and dislike buzzcuts, crewcuts and the whole short-hair clean-cut thing.
Like the song sez:
Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Man, GO FOR IT!!!!
Long ahir looks great on any one. Long hair takes time, care and control.
Time-takes FOREVER to get where you want it, but its worth every minute of the wait.
Care-You cant just wake up in the morning or just take a shower. This stuff requires dedication, which makes it all the more worth it.
control-While growing your hair, you have to control the urges to cut it. And while once its long you have to control where your hair is, getting your hair stuck in a chair or car door is not fun.
Long hair makes everything better, It gives you something to do when you have slow days and it shows dedication.
JUST GO FOR IT!!!
It will be awesome.
Peace
And welcome to a great place. Any and all questions are recieved with open arms
Let's put it this way. We are as dictated by nature suppose to have long hair. Within nature is beauty everywhere one looks. She knows well what she is doing and is all too perfect. I have never once seen a guy with long hair that didn't look well, and it ALWAYS seemed to go with him just fine. As for style? Just let your hair grow untouched for a couple of years and the "style" will look good. If you desire something different, you have to get the length first and then go from there. Growing out ones hair is the easiest thing in the world. Just let it grow and don't worry about how it looks as you go throught the awkward stage. It is almost like an all-win situation.
If you want it THAT bad just let it do its own thing and grow it very long time without trims! And of your face? Actually long hair will make it appear a bit more narrow. Nothing at all to be afraid of.
Good luck to you.
Hey man, welcome to MLHH. I highly encourage you to take the plunge and begin the journey towards long hair. You will never know what it's like until you have tried it... other peoples opinions be damned. It's something you do for yourself.
Later,
Allen
Go for it Allen!!!
Like you I waited until many years later to grow my hair long (I was 41 when I finally grew it), due to the same reasons as you. I never regretted it!!! I cut it a couple of years ago, but it wasn't long until I missed it again. Don't be worried about how it will look...it's all downhill after the "awkward" stage and you can pick a style that suits you. Prepare for comments from others...they won't be all bad, though. Once in a while, you'll get a compliment from someone you never thought would like it...or from a complete stranger. Good luck and enjoy it!!! It truly makes you feel in control and more free! You won't be sorry you did it!
Take care and keep it growin'!
Brett
Thanks so much for your encouragement! I truly appreciate it.
