Is that even logical??
It's the new theory of my mom. She told me my hair is geting too long and that one day it'll get really weak because of the weight. She says she knows some guys who had long hair and now are bald...
Mmm... i remember someday I had read that the longer the hair was, the stronger the roots would became... Now, can anyone explain this one?? =P
I mean, so far so good, almost 3 years have gone by and i don't notice any diference... Anyways, it scares me up a little, but I love my hair ^^
What do you guys think?
How about utter nonsense?
Even if there were to be some truth in it which I doubt, the hairs continually renew and so over a period of time 'full strength' pones would replace any allegedly weakened.
I fear you mother is cooling on your long hair - ignore her politely.
I reckon a lot of men bald anyway. It's very common, and since it's to do with hormones, then the length of the hair has no bearing on it.
Actually your roots get stronger due to the weight of each hair strand and your number of hairs shed per day gets less as well.
From what I have heard, baldness is caused by excessive testosterone and/or genetics.
Your hair is incredibly thick, and is the thickest of anyone here. You don't have anything to worry about.

Improper diet, drinking, and smoking can contribute to hairloss as well.
One of my sister's has terminal hair length down to her waist (she says her hair doesn't grow longer than that for some reason) But anyway, the only time it was falling out was when she was pregnant. Now that she's had her son her hair has gotten thicker and longer than ever :p
In the mid-1900s, there was a famous vaudeville strongman called the Mighty Atom (Joseph Greenstein). Grip strength feats were his most popular acts (at 5' 7" and about 150 pounds, the guy could tear horseshoes in half), but he also developed unique acts using his hair. While still a young man, he decided to grow and keep his hair long, and was documented as doing such things as: pulling fire trucks with up to 20 men aboard with his hair... suspending himself by his hair from an airplane... preventing a plane from taking off by holding it back with his hair... I think he even pulled a train car along the tracks with his hair once. Of course, I would NEVER recommend that anyone attempt these feats themselves, but the Mighty Atom surely demonstrated that long hair doesn't weaken roots!
What an interesting guy! Thanks for the introduction to him, Validus.
Elizabeth
There's only one Mighty Atom for me (short hair or no). I just love old anime :)
Like Elizabeth said he does sound interesting. Spiritual journeys and long hair sometimes go together :)
Good catch Val!
Remind me to submit a photo of all of my Osamu Tezuka merchandise, some Astro Boy DVD collections (namely the first 60's series collection and the entire 80's series), almost all of Dark Horse's translation of the Astro Boy manga, a Unico poster (KAWAII! ^_^), VHS recordings (and higher quality downloaded copies) of the Unico movies, Blood Will Tell "Tezuka Osamu's Dororo" PS2 game, Astro Boy: Omega Factor for the GBA, downloaded files of almost every episode (and both the movies) of Black Jack (who is incomprehensibly badass), numerous downloaded works of Osamu Tezuka, many of which are sadly in Japanese (which I may never know), my usage of the Astroboy Online forum, countless plushies that sadly aren't at my current residence at the moment, the insane amount of knowledge on Osamu Tezuka (and my idolization with him) and Anime due to Unico in the Island of Magic being the first thing I ever saw on a television, among other things! XD
I'm dead serious though. I'm always searching for more, and between Kimba (Jungle Emperor Leo), Amazing 3 (W3), and my disappointment with the fact that Black Jack needs to be printed here again, along with Rainbow Parakeet being brought here (and everything else on that note), it's rarely an easy search. You posted Tetsuwan Atom, and of course I couldn't help but hijack this topic! :P
Osamu Tezuka, who can be credited for pretty much creating anime itself, has been mostly forgotten here in the states it seems. It's neat to see the 60's series on Adult Swim, but besides that the effort for localization has been rather lacking to say the least.
I'm no expert, but I would toss that theory in the same place as "trimming accelerates hair growth"...the garbage!
Mouse
Well, if you're going to be bald some day, you'd better grow you hair as long as you can now, and enjoy it while you can.
Doesn't make a bit of sense =P Don't worry about it. Ttyl... ;)

To quote the well-known C&W singer and song-writer, George Strait...
"Ive got some ocean front property in Arizona,
From my front porch you can see the sea.
I've got some ocean front property in Arizona,
Now, if you'll buy that
I'll throw the Golden Gate in free!"

Then ask if your sister been warned of this risk. I'm sure your mother has seen many bald women as a result of this long hair theory of hers.
Elizabeth
thats what I was thinking, wouldn't there be a lot of bald women if this were true
Hey Joao
It would seem to be but the opposite is true. The longer the hair the tougher the roots. I learned this from Absalom and it sure turned out that way in my case.
Perhaps ask her the names of these guys and then ask them? Sounds as if your Mom is trying to control you and using excuses so that you will cut your hair.
Absalom for sure!
So far so good. Longer and even better for the roots.
I posted this photo threads below but will include it here so you can see at this length my hair has never been stronger.
Justin~
my guess is she was friends with these guys back in the seventies when most guys had long hair. and now that they're older they have natural hair loss.
by this same theory, wouldn't there be a lot more bald women? if this were true, crystal gail would most surely be bald.
No, it's not logical. And she is relying on anecdotal evidence, not any sort of peer-reviewed research. Correlation does not equal causation. Pseudo-science. Poppycock. You have nothing to worry about.
Carol
Does this "theory" work the same for women? After all, baldness doesn't effect men only, some women thin out too!! Talk about the street of equality being two way!!!!
