I like to wear my hear long , single length and just bellow the neck line.
But unfortunately it gets very messy after a wash. It was suggested
a body wave might control it but I dont like the idea of chemicals in my hair.
My girlfriendsuggested having a regular set in rollers. My question is
do salons do this for guys, what is involved in the process, how long it takes
and how long does it last.
Can anyone help me or has had a similar experience.

Yes a salon will do a wet roller set for you. I would suggest a chain
where you can just walk in & have it done. If you tell them that
someone suggested that you have your hair wet set to see how
it looks with lots of body or curl, they should be quite accomodating
Depending on the stylist it takes 5 min. to shampoo, 20 minutes to
roller set & approximately 40 min to 1 hr to dry depending on how
thick your hair is . Then about 5 to 10 minutes for brush out. The
roller set of course, only lasts as long as your hair doesn't get wet
or humidity is high (especially in summer) Under those conditions
the set can last 2 to 3 days usually depending on your hair. I would
highly recommend the roller set. It gives a style that just can't be
beat & can't be reproduced by a perm only. You may find that if
you like the set & if it doesn't stay long, you might want a perm for
support. Well, anyway, have fun & let us know how it goes.

Why not try a hot-roller set at home first to see how you like it? Hot rollers are fast (10 minutes start to finish, if you know how to use them), easy, and give a soft, bouncy curl that can be brushed out as much as you want. Ask your girlfriend to try them on you, if she owns a set. If you purchase them, get the newer kind with a foam surface inside of the old spiky ones.
And yes, salons do roll mens' hair, as is evident from many of the postings here. Best bet is to find a stylist with whom you're comfortable and simply bring it up: "How about setting it on rollers?"
