I've been growing my hair out for 7 years now and am having trouble getting it past my shoulders since my hair reaches its terminal length earlier than I'd like. It is shortest and most fragile on the sides. For the last couple months I haven't trimmed the sideburns hoping it will grow longer if I don't touch any hair on the side of my head. Is that what you guys do, or do you trim the hair that overlaps the ears when brushed down?

Granted I don't have long hair per se, I can say what I do (and will probably continue to do) with my sideburns. I do trim them but before trimming, I pull up all my hair near there so as to not cut anything but the new growth and then shape my sideburns. I then push all the hair that I can behind my ears so therefore I keep the length from those hairs, but I also have maintained sideburns. Dunno if this helps at all, but best of luck with your hair growth.

Yesterday I cut my hairs that were under my ears after I pushed all my hair back. I wear glasses and they tend to push those hairs down on my face...so I wanted to cut them. I guess their sideburns. I have a beard too, so that blends with the hair...I used a #1 comb on my face trimmer and will post a picture soon.
