I've been getting loads of knots in my hair now 4 a while and I have many split ends in my hair. I want the ends of my hair to look more blunt but I still want to grow my hair longer. I have booked a hair appointment at a trustworthy barbers but how much should I ask to be trimmed? I've been told by my sister that I should have 2 inches trimmed off.
Here is a picture of my hair at the back
PLease, please, PLEASE don't go to a Barber! Go to a Salon instead and despite what your sister has told you she is 100% in the wrong!
What would be the best is to have ONLY the split-ends taken care of. (Cut just above the split with very sharp sissors.) From there a "dusting" could be done and your hair would look great and be a joy to work with.
But a Barber and 2" removed? Forget it.
Wherever you have whatever done, be sure and explain EXACTLY what you want and watch very close as to how that person is following YOUR directions. It only takes but seconds for the wrong person to demolish your hair...........and it happens to guys on here and has for years all the time.
a barber is specialty trained in cutting short 'mens' styles. someone working in a salon will have the experience of styling long hair. i reccomend calling different salons in the area and asking if they have anyone who specializes in extra long hair styling. that's how i found my current stylist, and i hope i never have to find someone new because he is fantastic!
peace,
nic
Hi Tom,
I have to agree with Justin and would certainly not go to any "trusted" barber as we've had so many bad stories on this board about them. Seek about a stylist or salon that you can trust or someone that you know can give a good report or that knows a longhair friendly stylist.
Here in the UK I can certainly recommend a couple of good people.
Let us know what you decide.
Keep it growing and it looks in great condition from here.

Thank you for your concern but this barber trimmed an inch off my hair last year and did a fine job so I can trust him this time round. I just dont how much to get trimmed. If Im still unsure by the time my appointment comes I will just play safe and ask for 1 inch to be trimmed off.
You are most welcome
Well good for him and glad you can trust.
Whenever I don't know something I never act on something of which I know not, for to know nothing means that to act on something (of which one knows nothing) is just too much of an unknown especially considering nothing is known about not knowing what is suppose to be known despite the fact that something is unknown.
A wise choice, I guess. But I don't know.
Yes, oh so true, Justin! But, also keep in mind:
Once you do know you know someting of what you previously did not know you knew, then you know you know it, --- "it" being the previously unknown thing of which you knew nothing about, but now know. But of course, just to be safe... It is best not to suddenly assume you now know all there is to know about knowing, because a not-knowing "know-it-all" is far more dangerous than a knowing know-it-all (although we all know that a "know-it-all" of ANY kind, knowing or not, is no fun to have around at a party, --- unless, of course, they know they know something of keen interest to a roomful of other yet unknowing know-it-alls that desperately want to know!
Hence, this is why GOSSIP is so popular, --- because you know you know you don't have to really know anything!
- Ken (who now knows!)
You've been spending too much time in Knowey Valley.
(We really should go over there for lunch sometime!)

Well good luck with your appointment and why have more than an inch trimmed off anyway as in most cases that should be enough and I'm sure alot of the community would agree with me.
Cheers,

Just as Justin said... DON'T GO TO A BARBER!!! I mean, if you want a good cut, go to a female salon, because that is the only place where long hair can be treated as long hair.
About your hair, it looks fantastic, but if you want a little trim, tell the hairdresser you want to grow it longer, but want to have a more blunt cut. Also, tell her you only want 1 inch or so taken off, show her the amount so it's clear for her.
I wish you the best luck. I only had 1 trim on all the time I've been growing, and it was a very good experience, so I wish all the best to you too ^^ It will turn out ok, just be sure to go to a salon! Your hair is lovely ^^
First of all, to all those who said don't go to a barber...please don't stereotype us all. You wouldn't want us to stereotype all guys with long hair would you. I'm a professional barber who works on a large university campus. Since my customers are all types of students, I have about 8 guy with very long hair that come in 2-3 times a year to get trims. They are very pleased and have come to me for years now. I was trained to do all types of hair. The only thing I don't do is perms and that's simply because I don't want to do them. I've had the training but choose not do it. So, it's not true that a salon is the only place that can treat long hair as long hair. And by the way, just because it's a salon doesn't mean you'll be satisfied with they cut or trim you get.
Thank you for the compliments, dont worry this barbers trimmed my hair before and did a great job, he knows my intentions are to grow it.
Tom, first you have great hair. As far as the trim, it all depends on what you want the back of your hair to look like. If you want the bottom to be "rounded off" then 1 inch trimmed off will do. If you want all the hair in the back to be one length and straight across, it will take a trim of a couple of inches. Best of luck. By the way, I'm a barber on a university campus and have a number of guys with hair as long as yours who come to me regularly once or twice a year. It's true as you've found, that some of us "barbers" can cut and trim all types of hair whether short or long. So, don't listen to those who say never go to a barber. If you've found one you've tried and like then stick with them. Just because you go to a salon won't assure you of a good cut.
remove the split ends. Most split ends don't go up more than 1/2" up the hair shaft. You may even consider individually trimming splits. 2" seems like an awful lot of hair to remove.

First off, no barbers! Go to a nice salon place. It's worth the extra money. I'd say get 2.5 - 3 inches off, removing the layers. Should look really nice and make it look more healthy. Will be easier to comb through too. Good Luck.

I would go so far as to suggest getting half inch trims. I used to ask for an inch here and there and it always seemed like they took more than I wanted. It makes a difference if they cut it dry or wet as your hair is stretchy when wet. Most will wet your hair if not wash it however a barber I don't know.
I agree with the others a stylist would be better even though you trust your barber.
Good Luck
Kevin
