Hey everyone, I'm growing my hair out and right now it's probably at the middle stage, but I'm having a lot of trouble with my hair getting knotted.
Any advice? I try to comb it more often now, is that the best thing or should I be using conditioner too?
Any advice would help.
It depends on the hair type. If you have wavy-curly hair, it would be better to finger-comb it (use fingers to brush it). For straight-wavy hair, I don't really know, someone else on the board will. And I would definitely use conditioner, it makes the hair much softer and smoother and easier to manage. You just need to find the right ratio of conditioner to shampoo. Too much conditioner will make it greasy and too little will make it dry, it's different for everyone.
Hope this helps,
Mathew
I've got really straight hair, when it gets tangled/knotty (the joys of headbanging) I find using a brush to slowly comb through the easier knots, and then using my fingers for the harder ones works best.
I get knots every now and then too. I have curly hair, and this is what I do.
After washing, I condition it well and let it sit a few minutes. Then I rinse it moderately so as to leave a little conditioner still on the hair. Slowly, slowly, slowly, I then comb it with a wide tooth comb when it's wet. If I find a knot, I don't try to force the comb through it (that just tightens it up more), but instead get the knotted lock around where I can see it and carefully pick the knot out by removing individual hairs until the knot is gone. I haven't run up on one yet I wasn't able to untangle.
It's helpful to be able to see very well up close to do this as well as having lots of patience. But, I'm also the guy that female friends get to untangle some necklace or such that seems beyond salvation.
Friend,
There are specific products called "detanglers." I do not always use one, but I have one handy just in case I run into a knot on the back of my neck or otherwise in the ends of my hair. Then I spray, or massage, a little of this stuff in and gently comb again. Never pull, never tug. In the rare case, if the tangle cannot be smoothed out, seperate it carefully from all other hair and snip of 1/2 inch from those 7 strands which have become overly involved.
