Hey People
I have really thick hair, and or years, I've had the same hair style, spiky with gel. I want to try and grow it long. The problem is, it's so thick that it stays up even without gel, it just looks like a puff. Anyways, should I do maintenance cuts, or just grow it out like a bush and embarrass myself for a while?
I say you shoudl growi it out like a brush and embarras yourself for a while, getting maintanence cuts sort of defeats the point of growing your hair, all it would do is make you have to suffer through the bushy stage for much longer...
I'd say I experienced the same problems as you, although to a different degree probably. You definitely need to just let your hair do the poofy thing for a while before it starts to settle down. I haven't had any trims for more than 14 months. I found that hats helped a great deal, although I'm not sure how you feel about wearing them. Anyway, the results are more than worth it on the long run.
Peace,
Ryan
If you're used to gelling it up, you could always try gelling it down :) If all fails though, just wear a puff for a while. Soon enough the hair's weight will bring it down.
there is no 'maintenance cut' for thick hair
at some point, you will be wanting all of the hairs at x length
you can undercut or do whatever you like but you'll eventually have to get through it.
gel it down until it is long enough to stay down on its own - hope this helps
Hey R.J.: Without a pic it is difficult to tell, however...I agree with the other comments; just let it grow and avoid trims for quite awhile. The bush/puff that you mentioned is what we around here call the awkward stage. I'm sure you've heard that before. It "ain't" as bad as it sounds and kind of like a right of passage. Getting through it will test your resolve and committment and (as I like to say) grow some tuff Rhino skin to protect you from other's criticism and your own self doubts (should they arise.) Hope to see you on the path to long hair soon my man. Da' Bruce'ster has spoken!
Consider a hat or bandana?

Just remember: "What goes up, must come down."
The picture is me at around 4 months of growth from a 3/4 inch buzz, the height of my bushy hair. It stayed similar to that for a while and three months later was heading distinctly downwards on a regular basis. Still scruffy and fluffy, but more down and out, vs. up and out. I've had no trims, and I think the fastest way to get through the awkwardness is to just wait it out, use a hat/bandana where you can, and give gel a shot if you want. Thick hair may be an annoyance in the beginning, but I like how mine is turning out in the long run.
Mouse, the former "shrub."
oh my god. i wish i had a picture of my sister circa 1987. the two of you side by side would look like twins. (but unfortunately, she did her hair like that on purpose. for many years. ugh. alas, she got none of the family's sense of style.)
Rick,
Everyone should have your problem. Yes, growing it out may offer some difficulties, but when you have grown beyond the what to do stage, you will be greatful for every filiment. Use hats, bandanas, gells, rollers, and prayer, and -- count the months -- when the hair from your temples is long enough to pull back into a rudimentary tail -- 1/2 " per mo, you will be there.
Growing my hair has been very difficult for me, but what a relief that I can pull it back in the morning, and know that it is going to stay in place all day, if necessary, but of course when possible I like to tweek it to make sure it is at my optimum.
Be patient, persistent and you will be pleased.

Hi there,
Welcome to my world or as least 8 years ago and I know how that is but keep it growing and try to avoid the maintenance cuts and as you can see mine turned out alright.
Cheers,
