Everytime I wash my hair a glob is left in the plughole. It seems a lot and I wonder how on earth ones hair ever gets long when its constantly shedding. I mean I can run my hand through my hair now and guarantee at least two hairs will come away.
How many hairs a day or week does a normal human shed?
It sort of worries me a bit, also I have these 2-3 inch long 'curlies' on the top where the hair has grown back and I find these really annoying.
Oh well, thats the life of a longhair I guess.
Yes, you can really be sure it's the life of a long hair! I know it's really anoying, I also hate sheding...
But remember, the more lenght you gain, the more it will be noticeable, the amount you shed.. Suposedly, one person sheds about 100 to 120 strands a day. It seems to much but if you do the calculations it gives the regular 6 years of a life cycle for each strand (meaning each head of hair has between 100.000 to 120.000 strands of hair).
Just don't worry too much... It's normal to shed, I also shed a LOT and my pony circumference hasn't decreased so far. One way to be sure you're not sheding too much is paying atention the the number of times you toss the ponyband to do a ponytail (hope I'm explaining myself ok =P ).
It seems impossible how one can shed so much and still have long hair but... it's possible =P Good luck on handeling with the sheding thing... it's a thing to live with for long hairs =)
lol you know... you are right. I see how much I shed, and I worry its all going to be gone in a years time. I guess i am just paranoid.
Dave,
I had the same question as you!. I always wondered how do hair grows when everytime I wash my hair I end with a ball of hair on my hand :P
Well, it's a longhaired life. It's just the way it is.
What I found useful is to pass my hand plenty of time when conditioning my hair, that way loose hair will drop on the shower, and I won't be dropping hair all over the day. I hope I'm explaining myself!.

Hey i'm pretty released that i'm not the only one whos bothered :D
i think someone said that you loose aprox. 60-100 hairs each day and that seems to be "normal"
well i think we should just stop bothering :D
btw i was lurking from feb.2006 when i started my hairjourney till now. so dont be confused that you or anybody doesn't know my name^^ i'll introduce myself soon :)
so long
Hi Dave,
I would not worry about it shredding is normal and you get used to clearing the plug hole out.
Cheers,

Hey Dave
The normal hairs per day to shed are around the 100 mark. As your hair continues to grow longer you suddenly notice more and more hair because of length. But then a very interesting thing happens once the hair is very long. After washing there is hardly any hair to be seen! And yet, you still shed as evidenced by the vacumn cleaner.
It was Absalom that told me that the hair becomes stronger the longer it is and that it doesn't become detached as easily anymore. The same that happened to Absalom happened to myself.
I can well remember being at the stage you were now and seeing a clogged drain after washing. This will diminish little by little the longer your hair gets.
Oh yes..............there seems to be a once a year shedding period of several months (at least for myself and Absalom) where hairs at terminal are being lost like crazy. I am in the middle of it right now and it usually ends around the end of Sept. But the peak time of shedding the most is going on right now.
Hope this helps Dave and no need for to worry.
Justin~
Thanks; I was about to ask the same question, as I seem to be shedding left and right.
Yep. Indeed a mystery, Nutjob. I too have those little 2 inch curlies on top of my noggin. I have a bunch of them around my temples as well. I've learned to ignore them and have accepted looking like Frankenstein. Oh well.......Hair is very strange. Sometimes I actually think It's alive, It's alive, It's alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While shed hairs can seem like a step backwards they really are helping in one important way. Right now you have hairs that have been cut at some point in their life. They no longer will be able to hang from your head as far as they could have if left uncut. When a truncated hair sheds, as with any full length hair as well, it will be followed by the follicle's resting period then a fresh hair able to attain your maximum length will begin to appear. Essentially, the sooner your formerly cut hairs are shed out the longer your hair will be able to grow because the new hair can get longer than the cut one ever could have reached.
The major downside, the appearance of a large mammal living in your drain and menacing your toes and water outflow can be prevented for the most part by a cheap but handy drain cover to catch hairs. While you can buy a plastic device to do the trick a washcloth flattened over the drain can also serve the same purpose.

I nearly spit water all over my desk when I read that! LOL!
The old hairball eh? Although it seems like a lot it really isn't that much so I'm told and over the years my hair isn't any thinner.
I think sometimes if I saved them all cleaned them up and spun them into yarn I could have a sweater made for me of my own hair. LOL
Drain covers do catch most of them but at least once a year I have to pull the top off and dig down with a wire clothes hanger that hooks at the end and pull out the nasty glob. Not my favorite job but the price of being a longhair.
Cheers
