Been here for over a year now and I have seen the same question being asked about--"How can make my hair grow longer?...faster?.." or "How long will it take for me to grow it out?" etc. One of the things that made me humble and patient is growing my hair...However here are 2 supplements that I will recommend (hopefully the webmaster will allow me to). One is called Ultra Sil 180 caps $32.29CDN(an aqueous extract of Spring Horsetail & Vegetal Silica) made by Prairie Naturals, Port Coquitlam BC (Canada) for more info visit their website at www.prarienaturals.com Second is from Flora called Florasil 180caps same formulation as Ultra Sil sorry I am not sure of the price. It is also manufactured in Burnaby BC. Horsetail is the main ingredient. If you Google Horsetail there are several helpful websites that tells you the benefits of Horsetail. It is a plant, the flowers or blooms ressembles....you're right--a horsetail. I found these product not only enhances my hair growth but finger nails too! I seem to trim my finger nails quite frequently these days.
If you want to go the presription route: well there is PROSCAR which is prescribed for prostate health originally. However, when it is cut in quarters, and taken each day will promote hairgrowth and also shrinks bald spots (but only around the crown area). Proscar is Finasteride Tablets (also under the name Propecia). Most insurance will cover Proscar but not Propecia for some reason. For you guys who discovered that there is a slight thinning around the crown, Finasteride is the way to go....the set back is, you have to take it forever. Finasteride helps block DHT, a male hormone that is a main culprit for baldness. By the was Finasteride is only for men. However, Ultra Sil and Flora Sil are for both men and women.
I wish you all the best. There is no wrong in going the natural route or going chemical. It's all good for the scalp and hair.
Happy Summer To All!!
To everyone aspiring to grow long hair, this cannot be stressed enough:
There is nothing you can do to speed up hair growth. There's no pill you can take, no tonic you can drink, no religion you can practice, that will make your hair grow faster. Anyone who says differently is selling something. It takes an average of approximately 5 years to grow waist-length hair. The rate of growth is determined entirely by your genes. Unless you can find a way to re-write your genetic code, there is absolutely nothing you can do to increase your individual rate of growth.
IMHO, there is no single greater test of one's patience than growing long hair. My advice is to avoid focusing on how long your's is taking to reach whatever goal you've set, and just enjoy the rest of your day.
I almost fell of my chair when I read this :D
It would be very funny if a religion existed which consisted of praying for longer hair and rituals involving lots of conditioner, lol :D
Too many out there ARE trying to sell something... usually it's cleverly marketed in a manner that would lead a potential customer to conclude something that isn't actually claimed- thereby avoiding the threshold of "misleading" advertising. The ingredients to complete deception are intended to be assembled in your mind.
I see guys with long hair not only as proven practitioners of patience but also individuals capable of thinking for themselves; such people aren't going to allow the fickle wind of fashion fads dictate their personal appearance. One can also infer degrees of independent thinking outside of personal appearance with such individuals. This is probably why so many might feel threatened by long haired men.
Might increased strength and thickness reduce the amount of shed hair, thus making it seem like it grows faster and the longer strands happen to stay in more. Like fish in a pond--if you remove less big fish, there will be more fish becoming really big and so it looks like the really big fish section of the population is getting more numerous.
Humans shed an average of 100 hairs per day, ever day. The only reason it seems like more with longer hair is because our hair is long enough to notice the follicles when they fall. My hair is very thick, but I don't shed anymore now than when I did when I wore a crew cut. I just notice it a helluva lot more because it's long.
If anyone wants to blow money on something that will only help minimize what boils down to nothing more than an issue of perception, be my guest. But make no mistake, you may as well be swallowing sugar pills if you think this or anything else will speed up hair growth.
The reason is that the Propecia is in a smaller dose, intended to inhibit effects of androgens on hair loss. Therefore, it's use is seen as cosmetic. While Proscar, which is finasteride in a higher dose, is used for treating a medical condition. Insurance won't even cover Procar, if not used for medical purposes, though some insurance companies may. YMMV Without insurance coverage, the generic finasteride cut into smaller doses is the cheapest route. My prescription plan pays for my finasteride, because it is used as an anti-androgen to treat hyperplastic adrenal glands.
Women are prescribed it for medical reasons other than hair loss. I am a female on finasteride therapy for an intersexed condition that causes excess androgens. Some women with Polycystic Ovary Disease with MPB, have taken Propecia. Finasteride will only work for women who have androgen excess. And in women not of child-beearing age, or who takes precautions to not become pregnant, due to harm to the fetus.

I've been using Viviscal. I reached waistlength in 3.5 years.
Anytime I've stopped using Viviscal, I've seen slower growth and more fallout.
It is true that your DNA has the most to do with your hair growth rate, but there are some things that help. Anything that helps the overall health of hair will help it to grow.
(Those whom have not tried a specific product cannot intelligently comment on it ;-)
Hi Mick,
Wow thats amazing growth please do post a picture so we can see you great progress.
Cheers,

Hi John,
Mick has only ever posted one pic of himself here (that I know of, at least), --- it is the same old one I've seen over and over again for years and years... Iit's always the BACK of his head only. His hair is dark red (he's admitted to it being colored), it is very thick & shiny, goes down to his waist and is trimmed at that level very neatly & attractively; but, if the photo itself were any darker or dimmer, I'd have to squint and bring out a giant magnifying glass, along with professional-intensity flood lamps --- in other words don't ever count on any sort of sharp-imaged "update" soon (especially considering he had just posted recently about disapproving of ever showing his face here).

PS - Appologies for the sarcasm; but I guess I'm getting tired of feeling like the FBI might be looking over MLHH's shoulder every time I read one of Mick's posts!
Insufficient diet is going to impede hair growth. If a supplement fills in gaps in your diet, it will help. If your diet contains all the nutrients you need, the supplement will not help. What this means is that supplements help growth rates below normal, but they won't give you growth rates above what is normal for your genetics with you in healthy condition.
Some of the nutrients that help hair are fattening or come in foods that are fattening. People on weight loss diets are those most apt to suffer stunted hair growth due to diet deficiencies.
It takes many months to see if a supplement is having an effect on long hair. Your fingernails respond to the same nutrients, so you can look to see if nail growth speeds up for a clue. Or if you shave, you can look to see if stubble growth speeds up. If you don't see a speed-up with those, you can save your money by going off the supplement.

I give up...
I don't need to try anything to understand the science of hair growth. Read Bill's comment, below.
