I believe I promised ChrisG a picture of me in chainmail once, so here it is! All dressed and ready to go for opening day of the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Yes, those are rain boots...
Mouse
Hi Mouse,
That is an AWESOME picture of you in chainmail, it is just so cool, and I hope you have a grand time at the festival. As always, both you and your thick wavy hair look wonderful, and I am looking forward to your next update.
My best to you,
David
Mouse, A wonderful costume. The only thing missing is the headgear.
Nah, that would cover up that beautiful reddish brown
hair of yours.
peace, jonalbear
Hi Mouse,
That is amazing costume you are wearing there and suits you well. I hope that you have a good time and the rain keeps away. We are having one of those rainy weekends here in the UK as the jet stream has moved down, so much for summer.
One of these days I would like to enjoy a Renaissance faire over there and it makes me jealous we don't have things like that over here. I know remember Kevin.C posting some of the festival in WI a few weeks ago.
Enjoy the festival.
Cheers,
John.B
I am always astounded that there aren't Remaissance Faires in the UK, since all the ones I have been to here are imitations of Elizabethan England. Seems ironic they don't have them in England.
The hair contributes greatly
That costume is great, Mouse! I've never actually been to a renaissance festival (gasps!), but they do sound like a lot of fun. As for the rain boots, I believe it's the perfect touch to the costume, saying, "Yes, this is Minnesota." =D Hope you have a wonderful time!

Hi Mouse, That costume looks great especially with your hair as it's looking fabulous.
Awesome costume, thanks for sharing the pic :)
Awesome costume! Have fun at the renaissance fair. Your hair is looking great, too!
Awesome, I love Ren Fest! You look like you'd fit in perfect! =D
Definitely the tom boy look, remaissance style :)
Quite an impressive costume Mouse, looks fantastic.
Now go and slay some turkey legs! Have lots of fun Mouse, I can't wait for ours in a few weeks here in Maryland.
Wth your head hair and facial hair Chris you would also look amazing in one of those costumes - me I'll stick to loincloths and clubs!!
Hahaha! Nice one Dave. And I'll stick to the Wookie suit!
ROAR!
Super picture Mouse, your hair is looking mighty fine too - have a great day!!!
~ Dave
Hi Mouse,
That's a very cool costume! It makes me want a suit of armour and a sword. Your hair pulls the "Renaissance" look perfectly too.
Neil
Hi Mouse
Nice outfit and who cares about the rain boots besides it might rain anyway.
I was hoping to go to opening day up there but new job demands I be here. I plan to make it sometime before it closes maybe we can have a board meet up in our garb.
Have fun
Kevin
It rained pretty hard for part of the day. I'd planned ahead (usually I have black moccossins).
Thanks for all of the wonderful comments. I felt a lot more "Festive" with the longer hair. I'm proud of my chainmail costume since I made it myself, and it's hard to resist showing it off. Of course, cool weather helps since chainmail in 90 degree heat doesn't feel so great.
And of course I saw TONS of longhairs, most of whom looked very handsome and dashing in their period garb. :-) Most guys were wearing it loose or in a full tail (often with a hat), but there were a few braids/halftails.
Unfortunately longer hair takes a little more care when it's exposed to wind and rain. I spent a portion of my return trip gently finger-combing out tangles and then finished the job with a comb once I got home.
I also bought hair barrettes for the first time in my life. They don't really stay in well yet since I can't get all of my hair into them, but soon...
Mouse
Hey Mouse, hiya,
Excellent hair progress shot in your period piece SELF-MADE chain mail, arm guards, cape, staff, and Wellingtons! Gotsta keep it historically accurate w/ those Wellies! LOL!
Yeah, those Renassaince Faires ROCK! Gladja had a nice time out in Minnesota. But, yeesh, Mouse, since when does MN reach ninety?!? We were always told here Back East it's the big, deep, frozen snow state. All right, all right, maybe just in the wintertime.
I keep promising the board photos from the NY Ren Faire in Sterling Forest Gardens, Tuxedo, NY. Still haven't been yet, though. But, hey, I'll get there, I'll get there. It duzzint end 'til Sept.
Also, Mouse, nice choices ya made in hand-crafted barrettes for your ever-growing hair; a dragonfly and one w/t Fleur-de-Lis symbol. Ace. Thanks for posting!
Yours in longhaired camaraderie,
Quenyan

Yeah, had to go for the rain boots since it was quite wet out there today.
And Minnesota DOES hit 90 degrees, 25 days this summer in fact. Hot, sticky summer days, bitterly cold winters, blizzards in March...We get it ALL in the midwest (well, not hurricanes, thank gods).
See the link below for a list of 90+ days in MN (only years with 20 or more are listed)
Thanks!
Mouse
90 degree days in MN
I bet you can find all sorts of neat stuff at Ren-Faires. Hope you had fun in your costume.
Carol
Made your own chainmal? Me too, except I did it a few years ago and it's made of copper (extremely easy to work with and readily available to my electrician dad) Just curious, but what tools did you make your (I'm assuming) steel chainmail with?
Yours in mediaeval crafts,
-Christian Epp
Ooo, copper chaimmail must be really neat looking. Yeah, mine is the usual steel (the galvanized stuff available from my local hardware/farm supply store). I pretty much bought a big roll of the 14 guage stuff, wrapped it around a dowel that was 3/8 inch in diameter, and started cutting links. I cut them with just a normal set of cutters, nothing fancy like aviation sheers or anything, though I did use a large wrench to close the cutters because it provided more leverage. Slow cutting, and the project took months, but in the end I'm happy with the results.
Got any pictures of your copper chaimmail? Your dad is a good source for materials!
Mouse
Hey Mouse! That's a great pic, everything fits so well together, both the hair and the chainmail:)
Simon
Cool picture! Your hair looks nice, too! It might be worth it to try to get along without eye glasses, though. They look a bit out of place in the picture. But you look great anyhow.
Unfortunately I'm as blind as a bat (without the sonar), and contact lenses just don't work for me. Seeing stuff is part of the fun!
Thanks,
Mouse
Hi Mouse,
What a cool costume! Soon, with the longer hair, you'll be mistaken for Eowyn at the Battle of Helm's Deep.
