Quick poll/question.
Considering my appearance (my avatar is recent), hair type, face shape, personal style, whatever criteria you'd like to consider, would using a hair stick (or hair sticks) in my hair be an acceptable option (assuming I was the right hair length--see below)? If people seem to think it might be possible, I will go shopping and then try it and photograph the results for a second round of opinions.
I do not have a picture and my hair is probably too short at present but will be reaching that point sometime soon at most in the next year. And so, planning ahead perhaps.
My idea for the style would be to make a ponytail at the back of the head (at the top of the neck). I would then take one hair stick and twist the tail into a bun with the hair stick ending up more-or-less horizontal in the bun. And it would be one of the shorter ones but one that would still be visible poking out of the bun. Something rather inornate perhaps in black or a metallic or a non-flashy color.
I think a stick would look fantastic!!!
If I knew how to make a bun with a stick I would.

Clayton,
If you want to learn how to make a bun with a stick (I've tried a little bit, enough to try the real thing), then some advice:
1. Ask a girl with long hair to teach you. Or watch her make a bun in her own hair.
2. Play around with a pencil or a pen. Stick it through a ponytail or bunch of hair, right through the middle. Twist the hair with the pen (as in rotate the pen about its center of mass so that both tips make a circle). It will get tighter and tighter as it will grab the hair of the tail and bring it into a bun-like twist. When it gets tight enough, slide one end of the pen under a piece of hair on one side so that it does not rotate backwards.
3. Look on the internet--I think I saw some sites describing how to do it as well.
Or you can just make a bun normally and then jab the stick through.
Hello Antesse,
If you are comfortable with wearing them, I doubt anyone would say anything negative about them. (Who cares what others think?) I think the look could work, the deciding factor is on;e confidence more than any one physical aspect, I think.
Go for it and be sure to post some wicked-cool pics later.

I have some wooden hair sticks in a drawer, --- in fact, I had forgotten that I even owned any, until you reminded me about the topic by posting this thread... I hardly ever wear them; but, I totally like the look (but have no clue why I forget to use them - lol)....
I agree with you that non-flashy colors are best for any sort of hair accesory. I want my HAIR to be the *star* of the show (so-to-speak), NOT any glitzy accesory. Long hair is enough of an attention-getter on its own, --- whatever accesory I happen to be using for the day, I simply want it to be mostly functional. The most attractive hair accesories are ones that compliment and flatter hair itself, and/or have an, "original" look to them (which I feel hair sticks do exactly that)...
Whenever I see a guy who has long hair who also wears it a bit, "differently", in almost all of those cases, the air of confidence I sense coming from guys like that tend to outweigh any possible misconception that hair accessories are or should be a strictly, "feminine" thing. The exception to this rule would be guys who INTENTIONALLY want to look feminine, --- in that case, because my city does have a few of those people, what I notice is that then the accessory is also indeed very "glitzy-looking"... Coupled with a noticeably swishy walk, and/or feminine behavior or voice inflections, this is obviously meant to send another completely different "message" out in public (lol)!! I've never been attracted to the "fem" look; so, when I say the following, please keep that in mind...
To me, a guy who has long hair can almost get away with wearing just about ANY type of "accessory", --- as long as he still carries himself confidently, and walks, talks, and acts in at least a *reasonably* masculine-identified way.
... In other words: my guess is that, judging from your pics and your comments in your posts, I'd bet you could pull off wearing hair sticks in your hair not only looking totally "acceptable"; but, probably also with total APLOMB!!!
- Ken (who now wants to wear his hair sticks more!)
I would say to give it a try as a unique option. If you like it by all means enjoy wearing your hair this way whenever you want to.
I'd say if you like the style, go for it! It's only your opinion that counts, and if you wear it with confidence, no one will say a thing.
Good luck

Hair Sticks?
Easy.
You do not need a diagramme.
The fancy ones available on line are very expensive. More about that later, if you ask.
My hair is not as thick as I would desire, but it is shoulder length. All you have to do is grasp your hair in your hand as though you were going to put it into a pony tailer and twist it, allowing it to circle around itself until you have a bun.
Then take a tooth pick, and thrust it in and out through the bun making sure that your first pass catches the tail end of your hair. Then put the second tooth pick through at more or less right angles, weaving in and out and you will have secured your bun, and the tooth picks will be invisible.
If your hair is thicker than mind, then standard skewers used for
Indonesian food will do the trick. If our hair is really big, chopsticks will work, or any other pointed devices as long as you do not tear your hair.
I use these methods frequently when I do not have to be formal in my self presentation.
When I wish to be formal, I use a C0eltic silver clasp, and twist my hair into a pony tail, turn it up, and put the clasp low on my neck letting the longer hair fall over it, or upside down, folding it up and securing it with a bobby pin. I do not like pony tails as such, and all these methods work for me and I have to date not been attacked, criticized, assisinated, nor incarcerated by the homeland security agency.

Part of my desire to use a hair stick is to have the stick visible. Toothpicks and skewers will work but the visual aspect of the stick would be part of the style.
But now that you prompt me to ask about the fancy sticks, I'd like to know your thoughts and wisdom on them.
As for costs, my looking around has turned up some affordable sticks. The hair sticks in accessory stores (like Claires and Icing and those "girl" stores) are usually $4.50, $5.50, or $6.50 a pair and sometimes have a sale for multiple sets (although selection for "male-friendly" designs is sometimes limited). Buying a pair of decorative chopsticks at one store was $5.95 a pair. On the internet it seems more expensive for more "artisan" sticks. Of course, at some point, I can find a good stick from the woods and whittle it and prepare it and make a beautiful hand-made (by my own hands) hair stick for the cost of a little time and a few materials.
Echoing what most everyone else has already said - the only person who needs to decide whether it is acceptable or not is you. If you are comfortable with your look, and project that confidence to others, you'll pull it off just fine.
