Okay, so I got some chopsticks to work with...and I tried putting them in my hair. Unfortunately, the ones I have are just ones from a noodle restaurant. Hair sticks are hard to find unless you are looking for "girly" as in bright colors, flowery designs, hanging jewels and charms...
So, my next question will be to find some lacquered decorative sticks in lieu of hair sticks. But in the mean time, some pictures will be posted in response to this post.
Let me know your opinion.
A back view with a slight angle...
I think the chop sticks work well as hair sticks. I would cut some length off the sticks and just be quiet about their origins. They're usually bamboo or some other fine grain wood. Hey you could even just apply a stain of your choice to them!
Good luck
Bruce
The length seems to work fine. Maybe shorter will be better. The problem however is roughness. The sticks catch the hair in a bad way a little too much--it is hard to manuever them through (as compared to say a smooth pen which I have tried in the past). Most of the commercial hair sticks are smooth, either made smooth or lacquered smooth. A stain or a self-applied lacquer might work. But I may look for lacquered chopsticks in a tame design first--I did see a pair the other day that I think would work.
I think the quality of chopsticks will very greatly from restaurant to restaurant. We eat at a couple of different ones in our area and only one of them has really nice chopsticks. Of course I was only eating with them, but if memory serves me right, they were pretty smooth.
Bruce
I was at a store that sells tea and they also had a few sets of chopsticks on display with price tags next to equipment for sushi enjoyment (to go with tea). There was a nice pair of lacquered chopsticks which were black and dark brown and the top end is twisted slightly. Could be considered very acceptable in a man's hair and would have some character as well.
Another back view...
Side view...
From the front, they are barely visible except for little nubs poking out. Do not have a good front view.
Tried to get a top view but it did not work well.
Also, I tried a two stick arrangement and it appears to work well too. Strangely enough, it does not look "feminine" at all. Perhaps a bit androgynous but not "feminine"...
Two sticks, back view...
it looks nice, but you will not be a master until you can successfully complete the double buns...
Challenge accepted. Challenge completed.
I once was the apprentice but now I am the master.
Two sticks, semi-front view...
Hey man....looking great!!!
I think the look is perfect. Not girly at all.
Now that we have the picturs maybe a video to go along with?

Well, when I get a girlfriend who likes this style and will help me out, I'll ask her to make the bun and sticks really neat and make a video.
Have you tried searching the internet for hair toys? You'd be surprised how many companies make sticks, fasteners, barrettes, etc. that come in styles that are unisex and masculine. I've seen some websites posted on another board, of silver, pewter, and carved wood hair pins and sticks. Some of those would really work well for a guy.
Carol
Been scouring and been looking. However, it is still a little early for some hair toys and not sure if all of them would work with me and also trying to budget a bit. But if you see any stuff that you think would work well, you will drop me a line with links, right?
Well ... my opinion is that they would not be for me. Although I honestly didn't think they looked that bad in your hair. It would really take some getting used to..
Tristan
To be honest, they are quite comfortable. Putting one's head back on a rest is much the same as with a tail. And suprisingly I did not poke myself with them even while hanging out with them in tonight.
As for visuals, yeah they might need a fourth and fifth look to be used to seeing them...but then again eclectic and eccentric are my middle and other middle names...
Hi Antesse,
What a great idea, your bun held up with the chopsticks looks awesome! I had been wondering myself about trying a bun, but most "hair toys" seem to be made for women.
Keep it growing,
David
Well, to be fair, the bun is held together with hair ties in the picture. The first stick does add some support in that it flattens the bun which wants to stick straight out. The second stick is purely decorative.
Whatever the case, with hair ties and sticks, it all stayed very well together and was very comfortable. I was expecting to have comfort issues or to have a cascade of hair and sticks if I bumped it slightly. But I wore the hair like that for maybe a couple hours while hanging out in the apartment.
Well that's different and I don't mean that in a negative sense.
They don't look girly but as you said you didn't buy the girly ones you saw. I thought to myself if you were standing in a tightly packed crowd say in an elevator and you turned your head you could put someones eye out. LOL Although that's not funny I think of things in a humorous way.
I imagine you could laquer some chopsticks yourself for ease of use maybe even paint them black or something.
Kevin
While they are a poking hazard perhaps, you do not stick that far out. For example, I thought I'd be poking myself like crazy in the shoulder and in the hand when I bring my hand up to my head but no pokes have been made. Also, I guess girls who wear sticks have little problem...
I do not see myself lacquering a bunch of small sticks but who knows. I'll probably look a little harder to see if I can find a pre-lacquered set.
I personally don't like the hair sticks much. They look great on you though.
Thanks. They are really growing on me. I think I like them more than I did when I came up with the idea...so it may become a semi-regular occurrence. Of course, I said that about the pigtails as well...
It is simple. Fancy hairsticks are very expensive. toothpicks will do, if you hair is not too thick, and otherwise sticks that are used for "satay," in indonesian restaurants work well, are cheaply available in groceries, and can be dyed any color you like.
Caledonian.: Okay, so I got some chopsticks to work with...and I tried putting them in my hair. Unfortunately, the ones I have are just ones from a noodle restaurant. Hair sticks are hard to find unless you are looking for "girly" as in bright colors, flowery designs, hanging jewels and charms...
Thanks, I'll look into those satay sticks. Not sure about toothpicks--I think visuals are the reason rather than support at this point. I do have a box of toothpicks though...
they always seem to have plain black and brown ones in thier hair trinkets aisle. i've bought them there a few times. and sometimes when you go to a place that sells asian place settings (plates and such) you can find metal ones. that's what i have in my hair with the double buns, simple silver chopsticks.
peace,
nic
p.s. you are not a master yet... they were still a bit disheveled. :)
thanks for the tip...i looked around target for a little while but did not have the guts to walk up to someone and ask if they had the item i was looking for...not that i am ashamed of my hair style ideas but rather that i hate to be helped in stores...i guess i should scour a little deeper in the hair trinkets aisle, wherever that is...is that with jewelry or with hair care stuff?..as for asian stores, i did find wooden chopsticks at a tea store...but at several stores that sell plates and stuff, chopsticks were not found...i'll keep looking...
give me some credit for the three minute hairstyle at 2 in the morning after driving for a total of 5 hours that night (and after a 2 hour drive back home in the dark after midnight down the highways during construction)...in other words, will keep working on them...and if i manage to get them just right i will have to show them again...
the trinket aisle in all the target stores i've ever been in is always located between the shampoos and the hairdriers. you may look a little strange there, because there's always lots of froofy stuff - so stick to the end of the aisle with the goody and revlon products (the 'grown up' end). if you have a super hard time finding something, i'll be glad to shop for you and send them out. (i don't care much for glitzy sticks myself, so i'm always on the lookout for some nice simple ones that won't break in a week).
peace,
nic
p.s. i'll give you a little bit of credit... but just a little. i refuse to let you be a master so soon. :)
Okay, never thought to look in that aisle. Obviously I do not have instincts for these things...of course in the grocery store, I found my hair ties easily enough.
You see, I looked for chopsticks in the jewelry section of Target and in the housewares/decorations/dishes part. I'll have to drive on out there and check it out in the shampoo and hairdrier section...could also be that this Target is still new to me...
I admit I am no master...you are wise in the ways of the Fo...I mean Hair. But can we agree on "the one who will bring balance to the Fo...I mean Hair" because no one truly understands what that means?
On that note...meaning the back and forth Star Wars references...kinda interesting how the Padawans grow their long thin rattail thing and then cut it off once they become a Knight...of course, no hair planning to be cut once I come to age in the ways of the Hair.
