on my aol homepage today was a very interesting story. a priest in new orleans has started keeping what he w=calls a 'murder board' on the side of his church. every time there is a homicide he puts the persons name, age, sex, and date they were killed on the board. it's his way of making people be aware of what is happening around them.
how is this relevent to this site, you ask? the priest has long hair. a little more proof that there are definitly good-hearted long-haired males in the world. :)
i hope i did the link right, but i probably didn't. if not, have fun copying and pasting.
Thank you Nic for posting this story. It is truly sad what is happening down there and indeed across America. It's always a positive to show people that there are longhairs that are caring and compassionate people. My wife likes to point out scoundrels with long hair and I have to then point out that there are 10 times as many skinheads that are in trouble.
Here is a more direct link to the story from CNN.

Priest posts names of victims
...its' just that AOL keeps on changing the target.

because i never would have thought of that. i'll learn all this stuff someday... :)
Thanks for sharing this story Nic! It was quite interesting.
Also, i think that the priest looked a little bit like Ken Gourley on this board, only his hair was shorter:)
Simon
... I agree!

I find it more interesting that there is a priest with long hair. Often they are required to keep hair short and neat as an obedience exercise unto God (and the bishops, archbishops, and papacy). I know that monks are required to keep their hair short--at one point when a monk was discussing religious life with me he mentioned I'd have my hair cut...something about emptying oneself. However, as some of you know, my hair and my faith are tangled together--besides the long hair and the alb looked smashingly together when I was an altar server.
It's even more interesting that in the Greek & Eastern Orthodox churches that it was formerly and still is common for priests and church clergy to have uncut hair and beards. As you probably already know all about this, I won't add all the details, but the fact remains that it is so. I marvel at why there is such a large split in this area between Eastern and Western?
But, here is a web article. Lots of information and I can't guarantee scholarship or peer review, but that explains some of the phaenomena.
Also, Antesse, can I ask: What are you studying towards? Masters of Divinity to enter into what church?

So, wrong inferrence, sorry if I misled...yeah there was a time when I flirted with the possibility of becoming a Benedictine monk...basically if life did not deal me the right cards (success at grad school and girls to love) or if certain events happened (not gonna get into them) I would have wandered across the street from the university to the monastery and asked how to join. But now I think I am definitely on the path of a lay career and a married life (although a vocation of singlehood may be possible instead).
Oh, and I am Roman Catholic.
Have you considered a Third Order? I, too, am Roman Catholic, and a member of the Secular Franciscan Order.
Carol
Have not considered a Third Order...have considered being a Benedictine oblate. Being a deacon might be an option too.
That is true of diocesan priests in the Roman Rite of Catholicism. However, the priest in this story is of the Episcopalian/Anglican Church, where the restrictions may not be the same. I think it may be different in the Orthodox churches, who are bearded and tend to have longer hair. Some Franciscans in the Roman Rite have worn long hair, not too odd to see a ponytailed Franciscan in full habit with a beard as well, in many cases.
Carol
Yes. I'm a Greek Orthodox Christian and many of the priests of all ages have long hair, usually kept pulled back. Sometimes the beards are quite long as well. Of course, some priests wear their hair short and some are clean-shaven (or have van dykes), so it really varies.
Did anyone check out the "Staff Picks"? The one in particular was "The inappropriate yoga guy" LOL. Just thought I'd mention it to tighten things up and the guy does have great hair!Mark
