Hi all,
Apologies for the long posting!
Recently I have noticed quite a few split ends, and having never dealt with them before was wondering how this could have happened, and what is the best way, in your experience, to deal with them? They seem to be at about the last 1-2 mm of the hair shaft at worse, but there do seem to be quite a lot of them. At first I thought it was just my bangs, but on closer inspection they are at the back as well. I have no idea how long they have been there but I don't remember seeing them earlier than a couple of weeks ago (not that I've been looking for them because I never expected them). The rest of my hair looks great if I do say so myself, it's just the very ends!
There certainly seem to be too many splits to do a "search and destroy" without it taking me all day or maybe longer, and even then I'd probably miss some, so my only option seems to be a professional hairdresser........
Main thing I am worried about is if I get a trim my bangs may not reach the ponytail elastic for a while, they are only about an inch through it at present. If I don't do anything for a few more months until my bangs are longer do you think things will get worse?
My care routine for the last year-year and a half is to only wash my hair once a week with Pantene classic care (once) and then condition with pantene classic conditioner (twice), in as cold water as I can handle. I then finger comb and GENTLY use a wide toothed detangling comb (one or two "passes" only), to find any tangles which happen a lot with my hair. I have only blow dried 2 times in over 2 years I've been growing, for convenience sake only, rest of the time I let it dry naturally.
Earlier on in the awkward phase I used to use a lot of gel, and hairspray and washed every 2nd day just about to try and get through the stage, especially in the first 6 months. Maybe the older hair left over from the awkward phase having been exposed to all those chemicals is finally showing signs of deterioration?
The only other thing I can think is that this may be due to the hair being dry from my slow combustion heating at home, and air conditioning all day at work? Or maybe this happens to everyone eventually, and I should just get a trim. I just don't want to lose any more length than I have to.
So bottom line is, do you think it's safe to wait a few more months, without doing anything, or should I just trim and put up with potential loose bangs again for a few months to save my hair from the dreaded splits????
Sorry for the long post!!
Anyway, your advice is appreciated!

Haven't had a maintenence trim since Nov 2006.
I get split ends all the time no matter what I do. I have naturally very dry hair (even if I don't wash it). My opinion is that a trim when you have split ends may put you back a few weeks but you will ultimately have much healthier looking hair. So many people say that split travel up the root. I think that all they do is contribute to frizz. It is your call. If you are willing to sacrifice a few week's growth it is definately worth it. I have had 2 trims so far and both times I was very pleased with the results.
Make you you go to someone you can trust though. Threaten them with their lives.

Another thing. Don't use pantene if you have problems with splits. It is very good shampoo unless you have hair that is prone to splitting. I have been warned by a few hairdressers. Stick to Loreal or Kair (Not sure if Kair is a South African brand - don't think it is.)
Thanks Guys, I guess I'll book myself in for a small trim soon!
Will als try and change shampoo.
Cheers,
Matt
