Sorry for the fact i keep bombarding you with pictures of new styles, but i have never been one for judging myself, and i never realised i was such a self concious person until i began growing my hair.
On a side note, it is getting harder to style at all, it's a struggle to stick up because the top sags down again, and when i don't style it it looks like a circle over my head.
The back curls a lot more than i ever thought it could and generally, i hate my hair at ther moment. if now is anything to go by, the arkward stage will be a relief...
I think the style looks cool, especially the stray bangs on the forehead.
Thats a great realization! As some guys around here have said before, a good part of becoming a longhair is the growth UNDER the scalp. It takes a lot of guts for a guy to grow his hair out in most societies, so a great deal of courage is learned. And your statement shows a concrete realization of a personal attribute that many people cant admit to themselves. And youre what, just in your early teen years? Plenty of folks twice your age havent reflected on themselves enough to make that same realization (assuming it applies). Good for you!
One of my fellow employees sports a mow hawk more than a couple inches in height, so there must be SOME kind of product out there that will make your hair stay up. If you can afford to experiment with some different products, do so. While some members of the board say that any gel is damaging, I think frustration poses a far greater risk to your longhair journey. Find some strong stuff and start messing around with it. Personally, I think youd look great with the top spiked and the sides slicked.
Good luck!

Thanks mouse, you're always a great source of inspiration, just wondering what you mean by the slides slicked?
By slicked I mean flattened to the sides of your head and pushed so that it aimes backwards. Think of what the sides of your hair look like if you comb them back while wet. This would mean behind your ears, not shagging down.

Ah, thanks for telling, not used to the terms, since all i used to do when i had a buzzcut every 2 months was stick the all lot up...
Its unique, when I was in the awkward stage, I had a terrible time, and no gel. I just toughed it out, glad you are making the most out of it.
when it gets longer don't expect to be able to control it like you can now though, bad hair days are inevitable.
have you tried having a sort of sweeping fringe thing as opposed to pushing it all back?
Yes actually, that was alright, every little helps
the hardest part will be the first year. You will have to just style it what ever way you can stand it. But just think one year from now. I just went with what my hair was doing that day and that was fine for me. Keep doing what your doing it looks fine to me.
Lookin' good, Beanz!
This is going to sound hard for you to beleive right now, but I'll say it, anyway: ENJOY the journey you are embarking on, --- learn to have FUN as you hair grows out (yes, even during the "awkward stage")! But, one of the things that happens to us as we slowly becone a, "Longhair" is a very important change inside our mental and emotional approach to our appearance, --- that of letting go of self-consciousness (easier said than done, I know)...
Don't be afraid of trying out a hairstyle BEFORE you hear feedback and opinions from others, --- even if the comments end up being negative. Another thing that happens during this growth journey is developing a little bit of a, "tough skin" (NOT caring what others think about your hair, because as long as you like it, then there's no reason not to be happy with it).
You have a GREAT head of hair to work with, Beanz, --- you're lucky (and very blessed by Mother Nature)!! Just don't get too caught up with one particular style, because as you hair continues to grow, it will alter, anyway, --- so, learn to enjoy the ride (even the "bumpy" aspects of the awkward phase, if you can)....
Hope these comments have helped!

Gosh, everyone here is so utterly fantastic it's hard to describe, such feeling and emotion in everything everyone says..
wow...great advice put so well there
Hey Beanz, just let it grow and try not to think about it so much. If you are obsessing about your hair already (you are not even into the awkward stage yet), then I have no idea how you will make it through the long awkward stage without cutting it. Try to take your mind off of it and just let it grow. Wear hats, flatten it with hair spray or gel, wear bandanas... whatever it takes. Just try to forget about it and let it grow grow grow. Good luck and don't give up!
Kind words mate, i'm not obsessing over it that much, as long as i don't look like a complete idiot i'm fine
You absolutely do not look like a complete idiot (nor a 'pinecone'). Just try to ignore the rude or childish remarks around you. Be strong and grow it long for yourself. It will be a true test of character, but you can do it!
