Atebas...
Do you know what is it ?
A pic is better than a (bad) explanation :)
How ?
(the photo isn't pretty, hmm ?)
so it's only wool on a lock of hair. On mine, I cheat a little because my hair is not as long as the atebas : I put wool to simulate hair :s
I don't if it's common in your states. Rastas often wear it
If somebody want a "How to make an atebas", I'll try to explain :)

Hi there.
It looks really cool, nice colours, specially the purple and blue part. Here in my country people wear that a lot and -i know how to do it. Here we call it "tereré".
take care
Thanks Catarina ;)
Those in Portugal are called "Tererés"... I had one for one day when my hair was at 6 months, it pulled so hard I had to cut it. It's not really good for hair in general so I didn't do it again...
In fact, I know how to do those, just 1 week ago I did one on my cousin =D Yours looks really nice! Be sure not to let it stay for more than 1.5 month, or the hair that you used in it may get roten and fall off! Just some precautions here... It looks good anyways =)
Yeah, I know
My first was last year in fact. And after one month the base of the locks began to tangle and tangle, so I removed it, without any problem :) I think I won't keep it more than one month, again.

Vivien, you could probably add a small wrap upwards after it has grown out some to keep it from tangling as much. If anybody is looking to follow your directions they may want to shop for embroidery floss, a sewing material, to use for the wrapping. Hair wraps are pretty, thank you for showing yours.

...which was "Rasta".
I've been trying to find a way to either bead my hair, or tie something in that would emulate the Jamaican hairstyles. I guess this would work, ;)
So, if you would be so kind, explain away.
...even if I don't speak english well enough, I think :p
First, it's relatively difficult (for me !) to begin the atebas. The facts prove it because the base of the one I've made was too ugly to keep it. So my girlfriend re-made it correctly.
First, choose some strand of wool (4 or 5 or more !)(basically, for rasta : green, yellow and red ;)
Then, choose a lock of hair
After this, you can :
- begin to braid the lock and insert the strands. In this way, the damage will be minimal, I think
- OR make a knot with the wool on the hair, but it will slip more easily, and i may bring more tangles...
Maintain the strands on the lock and choose one color. Then, begin to roll up this strand around the hair and other strands.
Change the color when you want : you put the strand with the other, you choose one another and in the same way...
When you reach the end of your hair, continue a little with wool only and make a simple knot.
THE END !
So, I hope this is clear. If you have other questions, I'll try to answer you :)
Vivien
Thanks, I'll be trying this soon. Especially because I found some more pictures of it on deviantArt, and they can turn out pretty different, depending on how you're doing it.
Hi Vivien,
Here in California, it goes by a different name, --- which unfortunately, I am not remembering right now... "Hair cuffs?" Something like that... maybe somebody else here will know the correct name for it that we call it in the US (or, maybe it goes by more than one name, depending on which region of the country)...
Thanks for sharing, --- I think they look cool!
