I did a dumb thing. I should have listend to you guys about layerd haircuts and how I would regret it. However, I was getting frustrated with my long unruly curls and wanted a new look without going short. I did a foolish thing out of depression and frustration.
The good news it is not all bad. Layering was very light and most of the hair will have grown back in 6-8 weeks. My question is what can I do in the meantime to keep the tight curly ends more tamed until that quarter layer grows back and weighs my hair down again? Is there a special gel or relaxer I can use? Any good advice most appreciated. BTW I have promised myself never to layer again. No more cuts except dead hair and split ends!
Hmm, well I hate to say it, but my hair didn't behave until it got long enough (one reason why I refuse to have a half-long, half-short cut), but I tried a few things. Depending on its length, you might want to try a hair straightener. The downside is, that takes time. There was a learning curve for me, but it worked better than combing, brushing, and sprays.
I'd stay away from relaxers and straighteners altogether. They just do more damage. Try some non-alcohol gel like L'Oreal Melting Gel when your hair is wet. Work a small amount through and let the hair dry. You may be well-satisfied with the results. I used to do this and liked the look. It doesn't make the hair crunchy and gives it a little shine. It also helps define the curls which will make the shorter hairs blend in with separate locks that will form when air dryed.
Perhaps since it is only 6-8 week for the hair to grow out which is hardly any time at all, just let it grow out on its own as it did the 1st time and give it no worry. Just a thought before getting into products and spending money that won't do what your hair will do on its own with the correct length.
Best of luck to you.

Well it doesn't sound too bad and like you say in a few weeks all will be looking alot better.
We are always here to give advice and help if we can.

Thanks all you guys for replying to my post. I guess all I can do is wait it out. Patience is a real virtue when you are growing your long. Even though it has been many years since I was a newbie I guess I am not used to waiting for new growth but I guess 6-8 weeks is much better than 6-8 months.
Ravenlocks31, don't feel so bad. I think most of us here have done things with our hair that we regretted later. At least you didn't cut it all off. That would have been bad. I don't know how long your hair is. Are you still in the awkward stage? Well, I am still in the awkward stage at about 10 months of growth and I have curls (or wings), especially on the sides. What I do is after towel and air drying my hair I:
In the evening after taking a shower- While my hair is still slightly damp, I comb it down as straight as possible. Then wear a beanie winter hat for about 2 hours. Several times during that 2 hours I remove the hat and comb my hair as straight as possible, then put on the cap again. After about 2 hours, I remove the hat. Then I go to bed. The next morning, my hair will be almost completely straight until it gets wet again. Unless it is really, really humid. Then it will start to curl again in a few hours. On those days, I use hair spray on the sides to tame the curls after removing the hat. Doing this process every day is really helping me make it through the awkward stage. You wouldn't believe the difference in the straightness of my hair when I do the hat technique, and when I don't. Huge difference. I hope this helps.
Thanks for replying. My awkward stage was over a long time ago. I just believe I have reached my genetic potential to how long my hair will ever get. It has been to the middle of my back for a very long time. I do really take care of it too. I was hoping at least for waist length but I am happy with the length I have. The texture is exactly like Slash of old school Guns and Roses. In fact that was my nickname in Highschool. He was the first person to inspire me to just let my hair grow long and wild despite my parents protests that would not work out right!
I will try your method. I have nothing to lose. Thanks for the advice!
That's surprising, because good, professional layering usually helps curly hair. It sure helps my wife's beautiful curls.
