I have been applying to be a Correctional officer for some time now and did not bother me hairwise cause I have seen Correctional officers with very long hair.
However, today I was told by a CO friend of mine that I might have to cut my hair for the 16 week training academy. My friend says he is not sure cause it was not an issue for him. He has always worn his hair very short. I was curious does anyone here know? Or have an idea?
It looks like I would be going to training in November so by the time my hair grows back in from the bad layered haircut(see previous post) I may have to buzz it all off again and keep it that way for 4 months. If anyone here is for certain on this please tell me cause I am going to have to be somewhat mentally prepared for this. I have not worn my hair above my shoulders in almost 15 years!
I would imagine it depends on the institution. And the attitude of those in charge.
Can you just not _ask_ them what their policy is, before you go to training?

I suppose you should contact them ASAP and inquire about their hair policies. IF you MUST have your hair cut short, Consider this: "What is more important and valuable to me? My career and livelihood, Or my hair?"
I'm not aware of any of the board members who work at the DOC who may comment. Also I assume you are in the US so there are 50 Dept's
of Corrections one for every state and the rules may vary slightly. Like Chris said why not phone them up and ask so you can mentally prepare. I for one have no idea.

To all concerned. Michigan seems to be more worried about facial hair for a gas mask fit. Top 10% on any shift at any institution can receive gas mask exempt status. Hair is to be of no specific length but to be neat and groomed. Male or Female. I wear mine under a hat and tucked in my shirt to compliment the uniform. Shorter hair and no facial hair is required during the initial 16 week training period though. I would definitely check your states policy first!
