Hey
Im 33 and my hair is what Id call slightly thinning up front and its been that way for about 7 years. Ive grown it out before , about shoulder length but I ended up cutting it off.
I feel long hair is part of who I am and I want to try and grow it long and this time hopefully 1/2 to 3/4 down my back.
Does any one think that with the slight thinning in front Ill look stupid or should I just go for it ? So many guys now once they start thinning end up shaving their heads...Im not into that Im an artistic type and I feel Im meant to be longhaired for life what does everyone think???
I have a friend that is a dome top. Totally bald from the ears up.his hair is about 18 inches long.So it matters only to you whether it is to thin or not.
Go for it and do what your longhaired heart is telling you!
Good luck (And Welcome!)
Bruce
Sowwy about the multi posts. Emailed the mods about. Kiity leaped up on my lap, and the enter got was depresssed for several seconds. Eeeeeeck!
T get back on topic to the hair thinning problem. You may be showing signs of MPB, see a doctor and star Propecia right away. Not only will it prevent additional loss, you may gain back hair that you lost previously. There are several longhairs using finasteride either as Propecia, Proscar (cheaper, because you can split the tablets into smaller doses) and generic finasteride (same as Proscar) You not only can BE a longhair, you can stay one for life basically. Go for it and grow it!

That's really funny, Carol!! I have 4 cats myself, so I can totally realate! I hope the moderators DON'T remove it, --- it gives a good laugh!!!

Yeah! Cats are funny, and so good at giving you that innocent look that says "Who me?" Anywhoo, the mods cleaned up. There must have been about a dozen posts screaming "Propecia!". So it did look kinda silly.

Need I say more?
I agree with Carol. I have had some crown thinning, but been on Propecia (and Rogaine too) since early this year, and you cannot see the thin area anymore (It has filled in rather nicely). I don't know how well it works for frontal thinning (which I do not have) but overall I think it would be worth a try for you. It's working for me.
Good Luck.
Matt
Here's my assessment of the current propecia situation in the u.s. for anyone interested in considering this remedy. Firstly, it's almost guaranteed that you'll have to pay the whole cost even if you have some sort of Rx insurance. Blue Cross may cover it under some circumstances. The cheapest price I have found for 90 days @ 1 mg is $174 at Wal-Mart. Meijer wanted $210 so it pays to shop around. There is no generic propecia. There are on-line vendors claiming to sell it for as little as $45 for 90 days w/o a prescription. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. That's because there's a lot of bogus propecia being made. It's almost impossible for the average consumer to spot a fake. It takes months in most cases to tell if it's working. Fakes are small, cheap to ship, don't cost much to make. That plus people in a panic who can't afford the real thing from a drug store and you've got a scam artist's dream. Once you figure out you've been ripped off, try to find them.
Proscar. 5 mg doses of finasteride, same thing as propecia only more of it. cut each pill into fourths and you have four 1.25 mg doses. It roughly works out to being 2/3rds less expensive. I don't know about generic proscar, but if you can get a Dr. to write a Rx for proscar this is certainly cheaper. But getting the prescription may be the hard part. You're not going to try to make the doc think you have an enlarged prostate are you? And forget about getting insurance to pay for it--they'll pay if you claim to have BPH but you'll also be guilty of insurance fraud, a felony. So, whatever you plan on doing, I advise being upfront with your doctor and being prepared to pay for the medicine. BTW, any doctor can write a prescription for propecia or proscar -- no one needs to go to some "hair doctor."
WELCOME, chrisinaz!
I have a receding hairline (not too bad; but at one time I was self-conscious enough to almost not grow my hair out because of that), --- and as you can tell from my avatar pic, it certainly didn't stop me from being the longhaired old geezer that I am today!
One of the best-looking longhairs I've ever seen out in public was a guy who was totally bald on top; but, what hair he did have went almost down to his knees!!!! The self-appointed "Fashion Police" will tell you otherwise. But, they also say things like:
- you're too skinny to have long hair
- you're too fat to have long hair
- you're too old now to grow your hair long
- young guys look like homeless bums when they grow their hair long
- short hair will make you look so much "younger!"
- short hair will make your hair look so much "fuller"...
- short hair will make you look so much "slimmer!"
Blah blah blah blah......
Basically, just DON'T listen to the fashion police at all, because for whatever reason, they seem to always want men to cut their hair short, no matter what!
Follow your heart: and your heart has already spoken, --- which we are honored that you felt comfortable sharing with us here! Many of us that have chosen to go on this longhair journey have found that one of the things that definitely happens along the way is to learn not to listen to, or even care about, what other people's opinions are about something as personal as our own decision and preference to wear our hair long. We already know that society in general is not very fond of seeing long hair on men (at least with the vast majority of people in, "Western Society"), --- so I've learned to no longer ask for anybody's feedback (unless it's a question like, "Do you think I should go to So-and-so's wedding with my hair in a ponytail, braid, or just down & loose?")...
Does that answer your question??

You are certainly not too old: Your heart has decided go for it - and no trims along the way! Scissors, clippers and razors should not come near your hair for the next three years.
Hi chrisinaz,
First of all, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to you, I am delighted that you have found the hyperboard. It really is a community like no other on the internet right now.
Do not let ANYTHING get in the way of growing your hair long. It is a very rewarding journey, and the fact that you want long hair means that you CAN have long hair! The fact that you have detected very little change in your thinning for the past 7 years is a good sign. Carol has already mentioned propecia. It certainly can do no harm to see a dermatologist, who can assess your hair and see if propecia is a good course of action for you. It can stop hair loss in its tracks, and even reverse it in some cases, especially for the young. There is NO need to lose your hair unnecessarily.
My best to you, and happy growing!
David
Absolutely go for it!! You will have thinning hair whether it is long or short. so why not go with what makes you happy and grow it. I also think that the more you grow and the more you have the less the thinning would show.
Good luck!
What he said!
Actually, growing it won't hide or make thinning less noticeable. It actually makes it more noticeable. I am thinning and growing it out and i never had a "bald spot" on my crown, but the weight of my hair now pulls my hair away, so my thin but not slick crown looks more barren than it is. I also take great care to brush my hair directly away, and not over, this area so it doesn't look like I am trying to do a combover. In my opinion, going short or totally bald is the ultimate combover. Isn't a combover a hairstyle that intends to hide baldness?? And these are the first guys that will say something to you.
But that said, go for it. As with everything else, the most important thing is that you are comfortable in your skin. If that is so, then it doesn't matter how others view you. Add to that your confidence, whether you are thinning or not, which will always serve to boost others opinion of you.
Would you rather look like Slartibartfast (in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or like an old-time convict? No contest, IMHO.
