Hi all!
I wanted to ask the "pros" here if they've heard of a method of self cutting your hair, and if it really works. I may want to use it later if so.
I had a friend who had terminal length hair and wanted to go to waist length. She had a beautician friend who told her how to cut it and maintain it herself when she decided to make the change. I moved away before she made the change, so I never saw the results.
The method goes as follows:
1. Measure down your back from the nape of your neck to your waist.
2. Stand and bend at the waist, thowing your hair over your head in front of you.
3. Brush it as uniformly as possible over your head from back to front, hanging to the floor.
4. Lift your head to look forward while maintaining the bent over posture.
5. In this position, measure from the nape of your neck to the distance found earlier, in the center of the hair in front of you.
6. Make a small "center measure clipping" at this point.
7. Remove the length from the rest of the hair by cutting an upside-down "V" shape with the point resting at the "center measure clipping" spot.
Anyone heard of this? Does it work?
If you havn't heard of it, would one of you with terminal to waist length hair do me the favor of throwing your hair over in front of you and let me know if your hair comes close to making a natural upside-down "V" shape on its own?
My reason for asking is that I plan to grow my hair to, at least, waist length. I want to know if I'll be able to maintain its length on my own.
Thanks!

I have not heard of that method. I cut my own hair, by pulling it back into a ponytail at the back of my head, fastening it with a hair tie, and then tying the very end. I pull it towards the front, then just trim the end off where I want to. I then undo the hair, seperate it in the back, and pull each half over my shoulders, and check for general eveness, trimming any stragglers if needed. Finally, I comb it all back, and check in a mirror for overall eveness.
This works for me. I no longer cut back my hair, so this method will only be used for dusting the ends to keep things fairly uniform and remove damage. I prefer using the S&D (search & destroy) method for removing split-ends. I'm sure many self-cutters have their own methods that work for them. As it is, I have not been to a salon in around 10+ years, as it was easy to cut my mostly fine, thin straight hair. I even bobbed my own hair to chin-length, a few years ago. And I always cut my own bangs, when I wore them.

I've used this method:

I have past waist length hair(non terminal) and it doesn't make a upside down v shape when i flip it over my head and towards the ground.
The method you described sounds like it will work but I've never tried it.
