Hey guys, I love my long hair but like many i suffer like many do from SMPS (standard middle part syndrome) LOL . So i was looking for some alternative longhair stylings, and i checked out two dudes that have the main mane styles that i dig
(Glenn Danzig and Lemmy)
Now i am assuming and please correct me if I am wrong, but i assume that they are using some sort of hair product, as having long hair usually parts itself down the middle due to weight...so
My question to you guys is: does anyone here slick back their longhair? If so are there any hair products, gel, pomade, etc that is better suited for long hair? Any styling tips besides goopin up yer hands and slapping it on yer melon? Thanks!
and for those not familiar with these rock gods in the pics the top one is Lemmy (on the right) and i dunno who the other scab is. Danzig is the on the bottom pic.
I have a friend where his is like that, he says its just wearing baseball caps etc for awhile after combing the hair backwards, that trains your hair to get like that.
I am curious how long is your friends hair? Thanks bud!
Oh his is between the mid back and the butt. Hes had it a long time.
Could there be another alternative besides slicking back your hair? From most of the people I've talked to (and my personal preference also), slicked back hair looks really unkempt and bad looking. It's not that your hair would be dirty if you did it, but the look is common among people who rarely wash or take care of their hair. Have you tried a side part and see if that looks better? That's another great alternative besides slicking back you hair. Call me prejudice against that look, but I honestly don't dig it. However, do whatever you want. It's your hair.
Well i personally don't dig the middle part, it's funny while we are a small percentage of the pop that is long haired, i notice that everyone usually has the same middle part styling...kind of ironic. Really a side part ?? I never thought of that!! ~sarcasm.
what are you basing your statement that "it looks unkempt" on exactly ? what about the pics i provided in the original post?...i dont see find their hair to look unkempt or dirty do you?
LOL the funny thing is that most all long hair on guys (including your uneven mop) is "unkempt" to the general population ...but whatever, i didn't ask for your opinion on what you thought about the style, i just wanted to know from the people that actually wear this style so thanks for nothing.
Was that necessary? Tone down the name-calling and sarcasm.
What name calling?
First of all, if you actauly paid attention to the board, or read people's posts on a regular basis, you would see that "uneven mop" in no way describes his hair. The pic is old, and he has much more hair at this point. Which by the way, I(and many others) would consider to be some of the best hair on the board.
Second, this board serves many purposes, from information, to advice and everything in between. So, you WILL hear opinions, and suggestions on nearly everything you post. If that is unacceptable to you, then you should'nt be posting.
Lastly, Yes, I'm sorry but Lemmy's hair looks very greasy and unclean. This could just be due to MPB, but regardless, it's not a style anyone should seek to emulate. Danzig's hair on the other hand, looks perfectly fine, and the style compliments him well. In anycase, that is my opinion. And again, plan on geetting a lot of those.
Oh, and as for name calling? I believe that would be the following comment.
LOL the funny thing is that most all long hair on guys (including your uneven mop) is "unkempt" to the general population ...
someone call the wahhhhambulance
Um...Okay. I'm not really going to say anything more, since this thing has been dragged out long enough on something as silly as this. I was simply stating my opinion and some other alternatives (which you seemed to be looking for indicated in your first post), which is kinda what this board is for. I'm sorry if I offended you, but that's just my opinion on slicked back hair. There were several other great options people posted for that look before me, so what good would it do in just repeating what they said? If you want slicked back hair, go for it. It's not my cup of tea, but it's your hair, not mine. Enjoy your hair and have fun with it. :)
And yeah, that pic around 7 months old. I'm not offended at what you said (or your harsh sarcasm in the other post), but that would be classified as name-calling, and someone might take it the wrong way. Please don't do it again.
I've discovered that wearing a baseball cap on day-old hair gives me the look you're describing without goop.
You might try leaving in a non-oily conditioner. (Oily might cause scalp problems.) I've found one that is "mostly" non-synthetic and doesn't add a fem smell. From the health-food store there's a conditioner brand called "Pure Essentials". They make a fragrance-free conditioner. Try gooping up your hair with that. No guarantees. But it could work.
Good luck!

You know that is a pretty good suggestion, ill see if it works, thanks
Lemmy doesn't slick back his hair, he just never washes it and tucks it behind his ears.
How would you know that? You live with the ol git?
I looked at the picture.
I often tend to slick my hair straight back, especially now since i'm in the awkward stage, and also because one side is uneven, and my bangs are quite short so they will stick up instead of hanging down.
I often use brylcreem or some similar product, because that way the the hair won't get stiff like it gets when using regual hairgel.
Simon
brylcreem eh? they still make that stuff? I will have to check it out, is it a UK only item? Guess ill google it up, thanks Simpa... btw are you a greaser? Your hair in your avatar has that pomp look to it.
I think Brylcreem is sold both in the UK and US, both there are different kinds of them.
As for the greaser look, i kinda like the rockabilly culture and that kind of music, but i'm also heavily into country and rock:D
My hair is quite longer now than in that pic, guess it's time for an avatar update soon.
Slicked back, eh? I definitely dig that style, although not necessarily with the "wet look" imparted by styling products. This strategy worked for me, although I have pretty thick hair with curls throughout which oddly enough helps to hold whatever shape my hair dries in.
When almost done washing your hair, try letting the water run straight over your scalp and hair with your face pointed upwards and hair tucked behind your ears, as opposed to having your face at a ninety degree angle to your body as it normally is. Then, try and leave your hair in that same style until its fully dried. Again, I'm not sure how well this will work for you as you may have much straighter hair than me, and it may be much longer. And, as someone else pointed out, wearing a cap of some sort while the hair is drying in this shape can help, although it may look a bit odd when taken off.
Don't know if that made sense, but good luck.
Peace,
Ryan
