Hi, I'm a friend of Kal El's. I'm a girl with long hair and I'd like to share my thoughts on, well, hair. :)
My theory on having long hair AND living in Florida is this: It's ABSOLUTELY impossible to have nice-looking NATURAL hair WITHOUT straightening it, ironing it, blow-drying it, etc etc. This does not apply to people who have naturally straight hair.
UNLESS, a) winter HAPPENS to come along for a whole 2 WEEKS or b) you never step outside into the daily 90% humidity.
The end!
I've never lived in Florida so I am not exactly sure how bad it is down there. However, I would like to perhaps mention that "nice-looking" would be subjectively defined. And straightened, ironed, blowdried hair is not really "natural".
Whatever the case, I would agree that a choice is to made between natural and nice, just as in any place around the globe. I could use unnatural methods to make my hair perfectly nice...or I could sacrifice niceness and have natural hair.
Personally, I'd choose the natural. But then again my hair is mostly straight except for wavy ends. I suppose I would also prefer natural on someone, even with bad humidity. Then again, I have not lived in Florida.
shan..
Well. First; welcome to the board. Hope you decide to stick around.
I, however, must disagree with your post. Check out ChrisH hair update below.. He lives in south Florida and has great looking naturally curly hair.. I'm sure he puts ALOT of work into it; but the results he displays are incredible.
I grew up in Georgia ... humidity just sucks. But; can be overcome if one has the patience and determination..
Again... welcome
Tristan
thanks :)
I unfortunately don't have the time to put too much effort in to my hair, BUT even when I do, humidity murders it. The frizz is unbearable and having wavy hair doesn't help. :(
Hi! Welcome aboard, though I care to disagree. :P
I live in Alabama where it's always humid (my town is near a great area of water), and it's always scorching, even in the winter months (high 70's on most days, though it can get a lot lower than that). My hair, because of all the humidity, is constantly frizzy when I venture outside. However, I can tame my hair without resorting to heat tools. Just combing it with a comb and then a boar bristle brush every hour or so helps a lot. Sure, it's time consuming, but I like to have nice hair (the avatar is not recent, and I have a lot more hair), and I don't have resort to damaging heat tools. You can have great looking hair, no matter where you live, if you just know how to take care of it.
I disagree....
Ive lived in Louisiana for 22 years and it is possible to have nice looking natural hair. Maybe my views are a bit skewed, but I do believe I have seen many heads of natural hair around here and I must say that I do think I have nice natural hair, but I could be wrong.
Peace

you have a beautiful head of hair! :)
Amen !!!! I have lived here for almost 6 years now. My hair reached mid back until Hurricane Charly hit and after 21 days without power in 95 plus heat and humidity, I cut it short. It has reached my shoulders again and thats possibly the length Ill maintain it at. My hair is thick and straight and as you describe all is required to maintain it.
Dawn
Well you and Kal El could move up to my neck of the woods.
In the winter the humidity gets so low that everything is
dry as a bone, The result is more breakage during the winter
if one isn't careful.
As Mouse once mentioned the record low temps get so low that
Fahrenheit and Centrigrade are the same.
