Hi MLHH!
My names Matt, regardless of what my alias is. I've been growing my hair for about 4.5 years. I grew it from a skin head back in the day and it's come a long way. The picture I included is from February of this year and it's hard to see. I'll work on something new for this board.
My question is kind of odd, but I want to have a decent beard to go with my hair. My facial hair is kind of scrappy and grows somewhat randomly -- is there a way to coax it out? I don't know if constant shaving works or not, but I figured SOMEONE here might have a little knowledge.
Also, should I be washing my hair everyday? Or can I skimp by with twice/three times a week?
Cheers chaps,
- Bleak Harvest
Hey, welcome! First off, I would like to say you have a marvelous head of hair! Love the scenic pic (I should do some at one point).
And for the beard, I might want to ask someone with more experience in that field. Mine usually grows in patches too, but after a while (a month or so), the gaps fill in where the holes were. You might want to let it grow out more and see if any of the patches fill up like mine does.
As for the hair question, I wash everyday. Mainly, because my hair is so oily, that I have to. However, with the length that you have, you could probably was a lot less. I have shoulder length hair, and I still have to wash everyday, but it might be different for you. You could also try just water washing it on those days. Hope that helps (I doubt it did, though)
Hi Matt, welcome! For some guys facial hair doesn't come in full until they hit 20, so be patient. After you hit 30 or so, hair will start to grow everywhere you least expect it! Ears, nose, etc.. Then you'll wish you could roll the clock back abit! But be patient.
Bruce
hi Matt,
welcome to the MLHH
I also have scraggly and not thick beard. The best I can do is keep it short as it would look really crappy longer and I didn't really want a beard, just a sort of facial decoration lol
I do not believe there is anything you can do to coax hair growth of any kind. You get what you get. If you do have facial hair where you dont want it the best you can do is just trim the unwanted areas and keep the decent looking sections.
As for washing your hair, if you are not having any problems with dryness or dullness you can continue washing it daily. But if you are unhappy you can change the routine to wash less often. Most people here don't wash everyday, I have tried to do less but it does not work for me. Try less and see if anything improves for you.
Very cool picture BTW Matt, looking forward to a newer one as well :)
From what I can see in that pic your hair is awesome after 4.5 years and I assume with no trims along the way. Kind of cool setting for your first pic here but got to say its different.Maybe you should have done a snow angle in the pic so we could better see your hair against the white snow:)As for the facial hair thing not much advice other than to wait and see if over time it grows in more full. Not sure how old you are but maybe you just need a few more years. As for washing your hair its more up to you as I need to wash it daily as it doesn't look too great after two days and no washee!LOL.Anyway keep up whatever your doing as its great so far.Mark
Alright, the wife and I messed around with the cam today, so I've got a couple.
Thanks to all the replies so far, this is quite a cool board!
Hey now that is some amazing hair dude! And the beard is cool too, pretty thick I think, more than mine :)
Great update man, again welcome
Hi Matt,
There's no way to coax your beard growth out. It will either come out on its own or not. Some guys don't get their full beard growth until they are in their late twenties, although mine came in thick at age fourteen.
My mane is very much like yours in frizziness and it's at its maxed-out length. Hey, I'm a longhair, but I don't have a mane to my waist like some of the guys get on here.
My beard, on the other hand, is growing in very thick, and I'm getting a lot of length. I may be in the bottom quartile around these parts when it comes to mane growth, but I'm in the top quartile when it comes to beard growth! So one just doesn't know until growth is undertaken. What you see with my beard is 18 months of growth.
As with growing out your mane, the most important thing when it comes to beard growth is "no trimming!"
Good luck with your beard growth, and may it be prolific!
Bill
Bill,
I have to say mate, you've got one hell of an epic look going.
And thanks for the advice and the warm welcome =)
Great hair! My thoughts on the beard is go with what you have. Make it something that is unique to you and make the best of it. I think you have a great look going.

i disagree. your wife is a lucky lady.
welcome to the board! your hair is gorgeous. i don't know what kind of a beard you're going for, but the look you have now certainly works for you.
peace,
nic
Might I suggest thatcha jus' let it come in w/o ANY trimmings or shavings, Matt? Hey, zat a Sam Adams? Where's mine?! And where's that cool wintry cemetery? I'm NOT morbid, I jus' like the dark aesthetic of Goth. One o/t most amazing cemeteries in the world is the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. If you're ever in the City, you and your wife MUST make it one of your must-see places to visit.
Oh, and welcome to the MLHH, bruh! Your hair's great. Why not do a double-pointed Merovingian beard? That's what all of us descendants of Lord Meroveus (or, before they Latinised his name, King Merovech) do to show our ancestry. You look like you're well on your way there! Anyway, CHEERS!
Yours in longhaired camaraderie,
Quenyan
Hi Matt,
I would like to extend a warm welcome to you, I am glad you have found us. Your hair looks great, it is very thick and healthy!
About your beard, remember that beard growth tends to get easier as one gets older. Although there are a few who can grow a thcick beard at a young age, for the most part, beards tend to be thicker with increased age. I am afraid you cannot "coax" beard growth by shaving more often, you just have to give it time, and as I have said already, a few more years on the clock.
All the best,
David
Well first off WELCOME to MLHH.
Secondly - what a beautiful picture, that image has sooo much atmosphere, amazing!
Ok on to beard growth, beleive it or not mine is quite random at first (say for the first month), but as time goes on it thickens and fills in the gaps (because the length hides the gaps I guess). So my advice wiould be leave it for say 8 weeks and then decide.
As far as hair washing goes every two to three days should be fine unless you have a dirty job or work out every day.
Regards Dave
Hi Matt,
my suggestion is to grow your beard without any trimming for at least one month; so it will assume its shape, some dald spots will fill in by being covered by longer hairs, and you will see how it looks like.
I don't think shaving will improve the growth.
