Okay, this sounds weird. Especially since I seem to be posting about more and more hair stuff I usually find in ladies' hair stuff aisles.
I have brownish hair (with a few natural highlights of what seems to be lighter and darker browns and perhaps some reddishness and blondness in some lights and definitely some grays); check my avatar and other pics I have posted for a better idea. I have complex hair color, hard to describe.
My hair forms a nice ponytail now except for a few loose strands still. These strands can still flop around, making a nice neat style into a less nice neat style. For more formal occasions I plan to do a ponytail (or a bun) and I don't want to have loose bits flopping around.
My idea was to use bobby pins to pin down these floppers in the back of my head near the tail (so they look like they just might be in the tail). I do not think the old gel trick will work well anymore with only a few little pieces and besides I'd rather use a physical restraint than a gel.
Going to the store however, I found bobby pins to be in several colors. Do I go with the black pins (which are not my color but are classic and will not exactly raise too many thoughts if seen) or do I get the brown pins (which do not match my hair color exactly or match one part of it only and therefore be a better "match" than black but may make it look like I am trying too hard to match)?
Any advice on this topic will be appreciated. (BTW, I bought some new hair ties today in a bigger size [old ones are a little too small] and in different colors)
Cheers,
David a.k.a. Antesse
go with the brown. trust me on this. even though they aren't a perfect match (and let's face it, that's impossible), the brown will much less noticable. if you can find them, get the curved bobby pins. (i can always find them at walgreens). they form to the head, so you don't get any pointy ends sticking you in the head or poking out of the hair looking wierd. they are a little harder to use the first time, but well worth the trouble.
peace,
nic
Thanks, I thought you'd be the one who could help me...but I couldn't have just hollered out "hey nic i need help", you know...
I saw the curved ones at K-Mart (where I saw all the others as well). They came in a pack of 90 though...but it was like two dollars or something really cheap...so, I buy it and take two and use them and leave the rest in my drawer...oh well...
Thanks!!
I have daughters who use bobby pins. Believe me when I say that you're probably going to need the rest of the 90. They fall out. I could probably follow the "bread crumb" trail of bobby pins to my daughter's room. Great for the vacuum cleaner.

How many do I use at one time? Should I have several pins to hold one piece of hair in case three fall out? Or should I just keep a supply handy while at a place where I am using them? Or should I just keep more in my place because I'll have lost any I had in by the time I return home?
you should only need a couple. maybe one for each side. the trick to keeping them in is to get just the right amount of hair in them. too little or too much and they slip out. it'll take a couple tries to figure it out, but it's not that hard.
Hi,
I agree with the other response. I have the same thing happen with tails and use bobby pins in the back. My hair is dark blond, so I use the gold ones, but have sometimes used black. Don't worry about the extra pins in the package. They get lost easily.
Best are on a card containing 6 0r 8, from goody, with a brown plastic cover, which for me always falls off, leaving a kind of bronze pin. But believe me, no one will notice unless they glow in the dark. Almost no one notices, and fewer care, and remember you are breaking a stupid gender barrier which keeps men in a cage of conformity.
