I'm growing out my hair, and just coming up on month 1. As my hair has begun to grow out and shag down onto my ears I decided to trim up my sideburns to keep it neat looking. I dont know it that's what i'll continue to do though. I'm just curious, what about you guys? When you get to a long length, do you keep sideburns or just let them grow out to locks? Also, do you think side burns would help for a masculine look without facial hair, or does it just look dumb?
I keep mine trimmed since I can't really see them unless my hair is pulled back and then, looking all slick and clean, it's nice to have a clean and trimmed look for facial hair. This is only personal preference, though. Some folks like the big and bushy mutton chops. I do think they add a bit of masculinity that would help a stanger be less likely to mistake any of us with slighter frames for a lady.

You make a very good point about having it slicked. I actualy can't grow much side burn or facial hair (though I'm 24) but I usauly trim them up to a point. It looked nice with short hair, so I suppose I'll try it out with my hair as it grows.
I would say trim them - certainly to remove the bushiness, that simply looks untidy and it is very unlikely that they will grow out to anything worth keeping.
As to length I have tried both and I think it is taste. Look at James Raymond's ;last post and his sight: James has posted pictures both full length and shaved to the very top of the ear and give a very useful guide.
Thanks for the tip. Not sure i'm gonna cut them that short. maybe I'll just try out some different lengths.

March 2007 is the shortest through September when James shaved most off again for similar reasons.
I trim. That would be my vote for you too.
I'm not sure about length. I keep mine at about the middle of my ear. But, I would consider longer, also.
