You guys reassure posters that their hair isn't "girly". What does that mean exactly?
Often times people will slander men's long hair but calling it "girly" because they believe that only a girl's hair should be long and clean and well-maintained.
And so when a man has hair that is long and clean and well-maintained, people will slander the man for having "girly" hair.
The view of many posters here is that good hair is a unisex thing and therefore can be good for men and good for women. Still "girly" is a common slander just like the "get a haircut" slander.
The past two centuries long hair as been classified as feminine. Unfortunately, this has led to men with long hair, mostly in the sixties and seventies, to act excessively aggressive ie. longhair on men has become associated with bikers and drug dealers(just watch any Miami Vice episode the drug dealers all had ponytails)or sisseiness. Which is why it is going to be difficult to make longhair on men mainstream
Society, which has a majority of short haired men and long haired women, tends to perpetuate itself in the status quo. So simply because so many men do have short hair, short hair is a male characteristic in society's eyes.
Longhairs will be used as stereotypes even though there are many types of longhairs and few actually fit tightly into the stereotypes.
Of course, just as I do not want my hair judged I do not want to judge others' hair...I do not care about making longhair mainstream, just about what I prefer on my head.
That latest Star Trek series, Star Trek Enterprize, all the bad guys aliens have long hair.
I hope long hair never becomes "mainstream". It doesn't need to become mainstream to be accepted by employers, which is all I really care about. Being part of certain minorities in some countries is no longer a disadvantage, we just need to pass some laws defending us from employers.
Besides, stereotypes last for decades past when they were maybe once partly valid, and governments help because "Bureaucracy defends the status quo long past the time when the quo has lost its status."
Not all men have patience and the time to maintain it.
The ones that don't, usually get labeled potheads cause their hair is often stingy, and they give us longhairs a bad rep.
On the other hand, if we comb and maintain it, then it's 'girly'.
You can't win eitherway. LOL
You're spot on with that ATP. People shout all sorts of things at me but because my hairs a little on the wild side I get "dirty stoner" despite probably being more groomed than the person shouting the abuse at me and never having smoked. And on the other hand I also get things like "GAY!".
Lol
Neil
Gay people look the same as straight people, of course. When people say someone looks gay, what they are really saying is they look transgendered, which is the same slur as saying a man looks "girly".
They don't REALLY believe the longhair they are talking to "looks like a girl". No one ever tells real girls that. It is a slur. It is one in which they are equating you with transgenders.
Bill
Yeah, but something must be said if they're saying a guy looks like a girl and he has a beard. I mean, in that case, I feel sorry for them if they dated girls that looked like that. LOL
my beard is HOT!!
You have a beard? You need to change your avatar picture then...because it totally has no beard in it...
That probably explains why I have never been told I looked like a girl! [grin] And when I am with my partner, people even then don't say I "look gay". Instead, they often ask us if we are brothers! Sometimes we've been asked that twice in one week.
Bill
Hey Bill, apparently "hairiness is manliness" and no manly man could possibly be gay, eh? I would love to see the looks on some people's faces when you tell a homophobe that you two ain't brothers! LOL
BTW that is a great picture of you both Bill, quite colorful and warm!
Thanks, Chris! And thanks to Clayton for his comment as well.
Bill
I love this picture.

If longhair were mainstream and everybody had it and the short hairs were a rare breed who were ridiculed and discriminated against. I may very well have been a short hair, who knows.
Perhaps that's part of who I am, a bit of a rebel. However that's not the primary reason I grew my hair but I enjoy that aspect of having longhair.

Dictonary: 1. Female Child. 2. Young (formerly an unmarried ) woman.
I would suggest that you ask the one who posted "Girly" just what he meant in saying such.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger uses the term a lot referring to guys in suits, so it must mean guys who wear suits. [grin]
Bill
.
it is a derogatory term used to inflict embarrassment and shame, usually used by someone who is unsure of their sexuality therefor by putting down another male by calling him "girly" allows oneself to feel superior.
Most often found in insecure children, but often follows them into adult life.

You know, I'm a straight male and I would actually take that remark as a complement seeing the way some men act on a regular basis. Than again, I'm not the kind of person who feels an inate need to act their gender. I am who I am, not what I am.
I really couldn't care less what it means. =P I get called girly on an almost daily basis. I take it as a compliment! I mean really...If being girly means being skinny, and having long hair. Sure...I'm girly. Until someone calls me girly based on my personality, and not the way I look, I'll never believe it. People are so silly sometimes. *rolls eyes*
