Hey everyone
I've been checking out this site for a while now and decided I should finally post something! I'm a 20yr old student from New Zealand and I've been growing my hair since last December. As you can see I'm in the midst of the "awkward stage" at the moment. Umm my hair's not in great condition overall - I dyed it a few months back which did a bit of damage, I've also got hair that's very thick (as in lots of it) but fine (as in each strand) - which basically means that as soon as the wind starts to blow it becomes a giant mess! Cos of this I've ended up wearing a beanie for most of the (southern hemisphere) winter, but hopefully the hair should be a bit less awkward in a couple of months time.
Anyway my goal is shoulder length, which I figure is about 8 months - 1 year away.
Hello, let me welcome you to the MLHH.
Your hair looks like it will grow out nicely. Be patient and let it grow and you may need to use methods to restrain it in the wind. Keep on growing and your time estimate sounds like it may be correct. About 1/2 inch per month is usual growth.
Cheers,
Antesse (but my real name is David)
Hello
It looks good. Best wishes for your shoulder length quest, which in your case should be really rewarding.
All kind regards

Hi and welcome.
Hi Joel,
Glad you found us and welcome. Although your in the awkward stage
you have quite a bit of length so not much longer to go before it's more cooperative. As well you already learned the risks of dying your hair and we hope you decide not to try that again.
Thanks for paosting and look forward to seeing you around the board.
Take Care
Kevin
Thanks - yeah hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer until I can get it a bit more controllable. The front of the fringe is almost long enough to push back behind my ears now - I'm looking forward to that stage so I won't have to put up with hair constantly falling into my face.
Welcome Joel..
Its nice to see you've found mlhh.. this is one of the best places on the web. Lots of great support.
So far; your hair looks good. Its hard to see the damage in the picture you spoke of. Hopefully with a little TLC you may be able to skip getting the damaged parts cut off.
You should have no problem getting to your goal of shoulder length hair.... again.. welcome and keep us up to date on your progress..
Be Blessed...
Tristan
Welcome! And congratulations on your growth. You'll look great with even longer hair.

Hey Joel, welcome to the MLHH. This is the place for hair and all sorts of other things. Check out the "Chat" Link at the top of the main page, sometimes we will have chats going there but it is hit or miss when they are.
So far your hair looks pretty good to me, I really like the color. Long red hair is so cool so keep on growing it out!
Hi Joel,
First of all, I would like to welcome you to the hyperboard, and I am delighted that you have found us. You have a great start to a fabulous head of long hair, and your hair is healthy and shiny. Red hair is a real blessing when grown long, and I wish you all the best in your hair growing journey.
Keep it growing,
David
Hey, thanks for the feedback. As i said to the previous poster the reddish tinge is just a consequence of my hair-dying experiment a few months back - I'm naturally a medium brown colour.
It's really hard to see any damage from your pic. Hair that has been color-treated in anyway, needs extra TLC. Once a week deep-conditioning treatments help, as do leave-in conditioning treatments.

Welcome Joel! I think you'll weather the awkward stage pretty well as your hair looks to be in great shape.
New Zealand seems to be a fascinating country and I have always been interested in what it would be like to live there. The question I have for you is - How is long hair looked upon in New Zealand? Is it accepted in the work place? Are there regions of the country that tend to be more long hair friendly?
Thanks and again Welcome!
Bruce
Hey Bruce
I'd say overall long hair is pretty well accepted in NZ, it's a fairly liberal country. The city I live in (Dunedin) is a student town and longish hair is fairly common, but the situation is probably different in more conservative rural areas.
As for whether long hair is accepted in the workplace, I think it probably is, although of course it depends on the individual manager's attitudes. Actually one of our politicians, Nandor Tanczos, is a Rastafarian and has waist-length dreadlocks, but he's definitely an exception in the Parliament.
Hope that answers your question :-)
