So I'm growing out my hair for the second time around (had long hair once, but chose to cut if off - MISTAKE!) and I've got a little problem with it:
It's about shoulder length now, really thick and straight except the last inch or so of the hairs which is curled outwards in a pretty fugly way, which makes me reluctant to keep the hair in any other style than the classic pony-tail right now. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do, the obvious choices to me seeming to be:
* Leave the hair as is, keep it in a pony-tail until it's the length I want, and deal with it then.
* Trim it down a bit to get rid of the curls.
If you can think of any other ways to deal with it, please let me know.
Also, I remember I had this problem the last time I grew my hair out too, but I don't remember how I dealt with it. I did some trimming while growing, which might have taken care of it, but I want to keep that down to a minimum this time around, for reasons I'm sure you can relate to.
Well for each inch you cut, you need to grow another inch to get there and the end of the remaining hair may curl in the same fashion when it grows out. I'd say learn to deal with the curls. My hair is much the same way.
if you post a pic, it may be easier to help you. who knows?
Why not post a picture and let us see. Certainly trimming is not always the best plan, as you said it was a mistake cutting it last time.

i have this to but since i want my hair more curly i doesnt bother me as much :D
Without a picture it is difficult to decide BUT let it grow out fully then start to consider maintenance.
St the moment thrown the scissors away.
I think most people have this problem in the early stages. My ends are still a bit curly and my hair is to the middle of my back, but I think I am an exception to the rule.
I would just let it grow. After you cut you might see that they grow back the same way.
peace
I had the same problem at shoulder length. My wife kept referring to me as Marlo Thomas (That Girl) with the dippity do hair doo. I just kept on growing past that stage and guess what! No more Marlo Thomas! So...
...Keep on Growin'

If you trim it you will just end up keeping it at that length for longer. OTOH, you need to let it grow through the awkward length for the unwanted curls to go away. If you have some wave in your hair it will curl up when it hits your shoulders. Girls call these particular curls flips, and some of them cut their hair to that particular length to encourage their hair to flip on purpose, or even use tongs to artificially flip their hair. OTOH, guys seem to be uniformly annoyed by this phenomenon occurring in our hair!
