What is an undercut/ undershave.. i heard about it and i want to know what it does or what it does to your hair
From my understanding, it is simply when the "under layers" of your hair are cut or shaved shorter than the rest. Of course there are varying degrees, but the most common is to just keep hair trimmed abound the ears an the back of the neck. Just slightly with the hairline, not going into any of your long hair. As to what other users are refering to, I can't be sure.
Yeah in hair dressing circles and undercut is common with the bob cut, its as Gaijin says the lower (underneath) layers are cut about 1/2 inch or so shorter than the top layers so the hair has a tendency to curl under rather than outwards at the bottom.
Before I had my hair layered last week, I had a very slight undercut to reduce flips at the tips of my hair down my back.
Of course this is not to be confused with and undershave (although its frequently also called an undercut) where you get the underneath layers shaved completely and the tops layers are allowed to grow out. How much of the lower layers are shaved varies it can just be the ear and neckline to get rid of any annoying little short stray hairs, or it can be more extreme shaving the entire side of the head and the back up the crown. I sported the later style when I was 15-18, with the top layers grown out to the bottom of my ears at their longest. It looked pretty cool particularly when tied in a high ponytail, I consider it to be a bit of a punk style on teenagers, but on older guys if I'm honest it makes you look like a hick.
NB: Note on Political Correctness: I strive to be a politically correct person and not needless offend less fortunate sections of the community by resorting to the use of derogatory words to describe them. However, according to the British TV Show The Two Ronnies, it has been asserted that despite political correctness, it is possible to poke fun at hicks & yokels as nobody sees themselves as being one. *wink*

I know what you mean, I had alot of friends who basicaly pulled their hair into a half tail and shaved the bottom. This style is still very popular within the industrial music scene. when tell people I plan to have an undercut, they immediatley beg me not to... then i have to explain the difference.
Yeah to illustrate the difference see the pic above which shows a female shoulder-lenth hairstyle with the ends of the lower layers slightly 'undercut' to make the hair turn under rather than flip outwards.
Compare with the pic below which shows the other "undercut" hairstyle and a very extreme example complete with dreds at that.
Sorry only could find good photos of women to illustrate this.
I have a cyber shaved side parts - they are not as scary to get as they look! If I ever want to hide it - I just have to wear my hair down... When I first got "shaved" I only went down to a number 4... A really good example of shaved side parts or a "deathhawk" would be Darlin' Graves from All Gone Dead or Johnny Slut from Specimen..
If you want to have a look at mine at all - go to my myspace (http://www.myspace.com/kick_baby_sick)
Good luck :D
I would but I don't have a MySpace account and without one I can't access your photo gallery. Sorry but I'm not going to create an account, don't trust these social networking sites with my personal data.
It is basically where the hair on top of your head stays long
and the bottom part gets buzzed. Kind of like an extremely
wide mohawk where the hair is buzzed 1" or 2" above the ear.
There is no limit to the length of the long hair. I have seen
undercuts with waist length pony tails.
