Is it true that if you have split ends your hair will not grow?
And how exactly can you tell if its a split end? My hair is in the
awkward stage so its curling up, and everywhere now.

split ends have no effect on how much your hair grows because the split is at the end of the hair and the new growth is added at the root. However, if a person has a LOT of splits and does nothing to control them, it can make it SEEM as if their hair is not growing or growing very slowly because the hair is breaking off where it split, and even while the person is gaining length from new growth, they are losing length from split ends and breakage.
a split end is exactly what it's name makes it sound like. look at the end of an individual hair. if it is just "one even line" all the way to the end, it's most likely a healthy hair. if at some point the "line" you're looking at forks, then that means it's split. Trim it just above the point where it split.

you might want to scroll down and read what Bill wrote to another guy who was in the awkward stage and worried about split ends. Your hair's probably not old enough to have very many splits, and by taking good care of your hair as it grows you can prevent many split ends (and other common problems too). Eventually, if you do start noticing split ends, ocasional micro-trims would probably be a good idea - every so often, look for split ends and trim the individual hairs that need it.
