Hey everyone here at the MLHH organization, Quenyan again. Colors are changing here in the Lower Hudson Valley, finally. Gotta have a bud take pics of me in the display soon. Say, remember our previous member, Gman? He made a sequential point of, uhm, uh, decommissioning his laptop. Somethin' t'do w/ it taking over his life. Wehyull, he kept in touch w/ me, as we've had similar views on the relationship of an and the plant kingdom. Snail mail, as in handwritten corresp. What a novel idea, that.
I'd've posted this inmediadamente, altho' life's duties beckoned t'me earlier. But, in keepin' w/ all the O/T discussion ON this topic, here's an attached link Gman jus' sent abt some guy's seminar he just earned a degree from. It's to the world-renowned naturalist and mycologist, Paul Stamets' site, the opening page on which he's next to a humongously towering Noble Fir tree.
Yes, people, (k)not only are our deciduous and conifer trees allies of ours, so are those much smaller toadstools and other fungi, not the Magic kind (not necessarily), but the food ones and those that provide medicinal properties. And we hardly even notice them NOR realize their importance in the broader scheme of things. Tsk.
Read, peruse, enjoy, feast, marvel,
Quenyan, the Root Scientist
Be sure to tell G-man hi from all of us here. It is a novel thing, isn't it, a hand-written letter? ;-)
Yes, I agree, fungi are very important. They also break down organic matter and participate in the carbon cycle and so on and so on.
But I wonder, why the "(k)not"? Knot is from Old English, cnotta, just meaning knot; not from naught in Middle English, from Old English nowiht meaning nothing. I don't really think there is an etymological association there between something tied in a rope and the adverb of negation, or is there?
. . . the psilliness of my pscintillating psyntax, psilocybe cubensis notwithstanding, heh, heh, heh, heeeeeh, wehyull, I just have fun w/ whirreds, speech, the spoken word, the SUNG word, sound in general. Thank you or posting. The Eddas, you know, you know. The Vissudha chakra, the power of the will through the Word. And Celtic knotwork, the actual written language of the Druids that the Romans (and other chroniclers) our Brythonic fellows kept (k)not. Uhm, Magic, in general.
As I write this, Gman is probably already disboarding in the Bay Area for his biannual visit w/ family relations. Other 'an that, he's busily contributing his parenting skills raising a three-year-old son (who SO looks like HIS side o/t family tree, speakin' of trees again!), and an eighteenth month old daughter.
His is a well-booked-up life as a Dad, indeed. Wife's in advertising, methinks. And then there's that he's the future mycelial authority, himself, too. Nifty. Thanks for your input, Bragi. Your kindness and scholarliness duzzint go unnoticed and hasn't gone unappreciated.
Yours for ancient knowledge AND longhaired camaraderie,
Quenyan
One particular sentence in my previous SHOULD'VE read, "And Celtic knotwork, the actual written language of the Druids, that the Romans (and other chroniclers) said that our Brythonic fellows kept (k)not." Changes the meaning of everything, doesn't it?
Thank you for tuning in. Now, tis time for me to turn in. Good mornin' and good day.
Quenyan
Ah, that's cool, Quenyan. I get so conditioned to the danger of false etymologies that sometimes, things like that make me wonder. Yes, I love the Eddas too. The reason I asked is that you might have know of a connection I didn't. Ovid said Latium, the land where the ancient Latin tribe sprang up, was so called since Saturn hid out there, or was "latent" after Jupiter kicked him out of the sky. Of course, that's not why it's called that at all...and so other things go to!
SPEAKIN' OF THOSE ROMANCE LANGUAGES, BRAGI! Here's an attached link to a funny tv commercial promo for a Belgian parallel to (I reckon) their version of YouTube. That's the opening phrase. I think you'll get a chuckle out of it; the Only Begotten Son of God getting into trouble with HIS Father for pickin' up bodacious devil chicks in a bar and turnin' the big skinhead bouncers into dwarves!
Enjoy the viewing,
Quenyan
