I have lately been thinking about trying to get a job with the USPS . In the town I live in "real" jobs are very hard to come by and I think I would enjoy working with the mail. Some may remember when I posted asking for advice on the minimum wage increase; I ended up quitting anyway and I found a sales job that pays a living wage ($10 hourly + comissions; not bad considering I only recently finished high school). Still, sales isn't really my thing.
If anyone knows, are my chances of getting a job with the postal service cut to ribbons if I don't cut my hair?
The Post Office is an excellent Job for long hairs. The federal government may not discriminate Sex, religion, race. sexual orientation, hair, beard, whatever!!!! My postman has hair almost to his waist and a beard almost to his navel. I asked him one day about it and he said the post office doesn't care what he looks like as long as he gets the work done. He also said he has a cousin who works at the post office whose hair and beard were nearly twice as long as his. His cousin told him about working at the post office and inspired him to grow his hair and beard.
Hey, I've worked for a branch of the USPS before, but it was a mail processing job and not involved with seeing non-employees on a daily basis (such as a mail carrier). There were a handful of guys with long hair at my work location. However, where I live, I have seen a number of guys sporting long hair while delivering the mail as well.
The other response was correct, though. The USPS really can't discriminate among its applicants based on hair length or other physical features.
Don't be surprised if its difficult to become a full time employee, though. You may need to be a Part Time Flexible or a Casual employee before ending up with a secure job with the USPS. Look into taking the Postal Exam if you haven't (if you want this to be a long term thing).
my local post office has two guys with waist length hair working the registers so i think you will be okay.
I have seen USPS employees with hair mid-back; but I don't know if they grew it after hire or were hired in. It is a government job; should be no issue.
Hi Ralph. The post office is very long hair friendly, and has been so since at least the early 70s. Long hair (even waist length long) should not be a problem.

You'll have no problem getting hired. I was hired twice with my hair, never said one word about it. While I worked in the Post Office, I seen other longhaired guys there.
Back about 15 years ago I worked for them and I had long hair. Also, a friend of mine is working for them and he had long hair at the time of his hiring, but he wore it in a braid all the time. You should be able to get a job with the USPS. Good luck.

I don't think getting a job with them will mean having to cut your hair. Right where I live there are two who deliver mail with Ponytails as well as one with long hair loose who works daily with the customers and has been for the last two or so years. And.............I live in a small town a little bit on the "nibby side" where people seem to love to gossip and pass judgement on everyone......except themselves.
There is definitely no problem with having long hair and getting a job with the USPS. I would like to add, though, that if you get experience there are want to leverage it by going to work for private carriers, some of those do discriminate.
