Hi, im new here. I have long hair ( shoulders) and i am 20 years old, just when i was getting my hair the way i allways dreamed something happened. The hair on top off my had always was more damaged than the rest, i always thought it was because of the sun and never bothered. Well, on the back of my head, on the top you can see a lot of the scalp, i brush my hair from the middle of the top of my hair to cover it but everyday im sad when i look at it. I have good hair on all my head, so im thinking of starting to use my hair on a ponytail, so i can hide the sad sad truth. My dad is all bald. Why did this started happening so soon? i wouldnt mind if i was 30, but 20y?? Im the youngest balding guy ive ever seen...Just wanted to talk.
I'm 21 and graying if that helps any.
My advice is to grow it and love it and wear it how you like it and don't let your creeping baldness be your master. You may end up with a long ponytail and a bald top but who cares? At least you'd have the ponytail. Of course, you could always become distinctive with a good cap or hat...
Hi Nick,
Well, that's genetics for ya'.
If your father is completely bald, this basically tells everything.
I don't know about you, but with my genes I'm quite sure I'll be completely bald by the age of 30 (I'm 18 now), so I promised myself to shave my head completely when it'll begin (if it begins, of course). Can't stop mother nature, sadly :(
I feel for you, man. That was always a big fear of mine since I was about 15.
You could:
* try Propecia - it's most effective for young guys
* get transplants - the modern micrografts are much better than the old plugs and that hair will never fall out unlike the Propecia method
* just grow what you have. Think of the Klingons, they look pretty cool with their long hair and bald tops
* wait for new technology such as hair cloning
Klingons - I love it!!! I too still think they look so cool...
It goes unsaid, but far too many men believe they "must" cut their hair, often extremely short, if their hairline recedes or balding occurs past a certain point. There will always be those who believe this; both men and women. If more men defy this tendency more men would undoubtedly feel comfortable with growing the hair they do have long...
I knew a guy who had tailbone length hair and a bald patch at the back that he covered by tying his hair back. It shouldn't affect the length that you can grow your hair. The fact is, major baldness usually does start to show before 30, and does tend to be genetic. There are lots of options nowadays though, besides just hats!
Mind you, everyone has a certain amount of male pattern baldness sooner or later, unless they are female, it's just a matter of how much. For some it's just a little loss around the temples and the crown, which is hardly noticeable (I have that myself, it's perfectly normal), and at the other extreme only the hair at the back and sides is left on some people, although that can still grow just as long as on anyone else. There again, the crown always looks thinner even if you have no hair loss atall.
You could see a doctor. Sometimes hair loss can be fungal and cured easily with anti-fungal cream (I had that happen in my beard), but if not they can prescribe propecia or rogaine.
Hi Nick,
First of all, welcome to the hyperboard. I am sorry that this has happened to you, but try to remember that there are things that can be done to save your hair. I would urge you to see a doctor, preferably a dermatologist, as soon as possible. He can assess your hair and determine an effective course of action. Propecia is a drug that directly slows down the activity of the enzyme responsible for male hair loss, and is especially effective for the young. Transplants are another option, but are best reserved for those instances where the propecia is not as effective, as the supply of donor hair is limited. I know that there has been some VERY promising research, and perhaps, in future years, MPB will be eradicated in future generations.
Take care, and keep us updated,
David
I'm sorry to hear what your going through and wish I had some suggestions but I don't. Other than you could consult a doctor to see if there is anything treatment or drugwise you can do to slow or stop the process. I did know one other guy I think he was 23 and he was loosing it fast.
Good luck and don't give up too easily see a doctoe asap it's easier to slow it down than to re-grow it. You see all these TV commercials but I have yet to meet anyone who has successfully
re-grown hair.

MPB is one of the most unfair things that Mother Nature can sometimes do to men. It all depends on one's genetics. I have a receding hairline, for example, --- it could be worse; but, ANY hair loss is an unwelcome one.
I once saw a guy who was totally bald on top and in front; but what hair he did have, went all the way almost to his KNEES, --- it looked AWESOME!!!! To this day, it was one of the most inspiring sights I ever saw, --- and it changed my outlook, giving me great courage! I spoke with him, even though he was a total stranger to me: "I want to have hair like that someday!" (or, something similar was what I said... it was several years ago, so I don't recall the exact words). His answer was simple, yet profound: "I figure God made me with hair that naturally grows to its own length, so what right do I have to cut it off?"
There are also drugs that can help prevent any further hair loss, although they are expensive. I don't use any of those myself; but have just learned to accept the facts of whatever genetics and aging do to me... It's an individual choice, though.
Just don't tell yourself that losing hair on top means you'll "HAVE to" someday cut it short. That's the Fashion Police talking, --- and I no longer believe in them anymore!
Hope these comments have helped...

Start taking propecia. Go see a dr., a family practice physician if you live in the U.S., and get a prescription; get it filled (go to wal-mart, it's cheapest) and start taking it. Bad news: you'll have to take it indefinitely. Good news: it should halt your hair loss.
