I posted my first update 10 days ago, while living in Japan. I was a bit nervous to come home to the US, uncertain how my family would react to my growing out. Not to mention just the move itself. In any case, my family doesn't seem to care much. I hope as it gets longer the attitude remains the same. Also, though it's been only 10 days since my update, I've really seen some progress. Especialy in the back. I can't wait to ride the waves as they grow out! Everyone keeps saying "I had no idea your hair was so curly".
Welcome home Gaijin ...
How does it feel to be out of the service?
If you think your hair is curly now; wait about 4 more months when you're really getting going in the awkward stage. Some days are quite comical I assure you! :)
Glad you have the support of your family...

btw... Where do you live now?
Well, Ive been out the USAF since may, but I was still living in Japan with my wife. It feels great to be out. All in all I enjoyed my first tour. I made some great lifelong friends and mentors. My second tour though, it was plauged with poor leadership, overwork, lies, and just about everything else that you could think of. That's actually the main reason I left. Not to mention my rather differing view on world issues lol. But all things considered, a very posotive experience. I live in Michigan now, in the Downriver/Metro Detroit area. What branch did you serve in?
Hey Gaijin...
I too was USAF ... I've been out for just over 10 years. I agree ... a great experience but like you ... I disagree with current world issues; and my second assignment was horrible as well.. must be an Air Force thing...
Take Care...

Well, if it makes you feel better...
For many years I had no clue, either, that I had natural waves in my hair, --- not until I left home at age 18. My dad would not allow any hairstyle in his house other than military-style short haircuts (and I do mean SHORT) for me and my brothers. I had always assumed that my hair was pin-straight; but I found out once I left his house and stuck out on my own that this was not so!!!
Have fun starting off on your long hair adventure, --- I certainly remember my own feeling of excitement when I started mine!

It is a fun ride, to be sure, Gaijin. I've wanted to grow my hair out for close to twenty years and just could never commit to it - and believe me, growing out curly hair is definitely a commitment (and some might say you should be committed). Finally, beginning in Late April of 2006, I stopped getting my quarter-annual haircuts. While I am occasionally frustrated by the tangled, frizzy, hot mop on my head, I usually love having bouncy, moveable, warm, character-giving Manlocks.
Best of luck as you you start you journey in earnest.
All the best,
Shawn (Mr. Crow)
