Hey,
I came across this video on youtube about three months ago. This ancient instrument is fascinating, and has a very melodic sound. The person playing it lives in the UK, and is probably one of the only people who actually sell them too, so when I move there, I plan to buy one and start practicing. (They come in smaller versions that still make amazing sounds, btw.)
Anyway, thought i'd share :) I think the music is composed by her too, and for what it's worth, she has pretty long hair.
Enjoy,

Great music, I wish she could come and play on one of my songs. :)
I've seen this instrument played at the Ren Faire I go to it's beautiful music. The lady that plays it at the faire ha slong hair too and I could just sit for hours and listen.
If you learn to play one of those that would brilliant.
Good luck with that also when are you planning to move to the UK?

Next September (2008). I'm applying to 5 Unis that are all within a 100 mile radius of London, except one of my backup choices.
Hopefully I'll have the time to learn the Dulcimer.
I heard of these instruments a long time ago when I read a funny essay by (now deceased) Logan Whitehurst. Never got a chance to actually hear 'em before though!
Friends,
I would take up the Dulcimser in a hearbeat, if I were not heart beat away from death, so I have devoted these next years to learning Arabic. Dulcimers are a part of our Appalichian culture, and the most interesting site I found was from Indiana -- also part of Apalachia. I do not commend their wares nor their service, but their site had a good sound track
I suggest you type in North Carolina & Hammered Dulcimer and see what you get. Then Caveat Emptor, as we picts & Scots said when we were in Rome.

I've heard people play the hammered dulcimer before but this is, by far the best I've heard!
Thanks for the link...

Thanks for sharing this with us. Most interesting. She plays well in the idiom of "New Age Music" ala the sound of early George Winston. I had never heard this type of music played on a Dulcimer before. And yes...........great long hair. :-)
That is very cool to hear. Like Caledonian said, those are available in Appalachia in the eastern US from different makers. They used to sell them at the North Georgia Mountain Fair. There used to be a television program called the "Victory Garden" on US public TV whose opening credits were shown while this instrument was being played.

Thank You for sharing that clip......Beautiful !!
I was at a Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, Washington last month and there was a young lady playing one.....I could have spent all day listening.
I am a Piano Technician and truly believe that the Hammered Dulcimer is one of the most delightful instruments ever made. They are readily available for purchase complete or in kit form. I intend to build one this winter......
Build one? That sounds awesome! Tell us how it goes :)
