Hi again, i have some questions and i would like to understand what i am doing wrong. When i decided on growing my hair i had it short. My hair is very curly, so for months i just had my hair looking like an afro, not that curly, but you get the idea. My hair is now by my shoulders. I never had much care, i wash my head 3 times a week, i use an anti-dandruff shampoo and a conditioner for curly hair. I used to comb my hair like 1 time every 3 weeks but its very dificult because it is so curly, there was a lot of hair breaking and i feel like i was making more tangles. I never liked the look of my hair, above my hair there is a lot of individual hair flying around. Its a loot dry too, it looks ok when i use a lot of conditioner but on the second day (after i have slept) he is all messy. I sleep with my hair on a ponytail. When i bath, theres a lot of hair falling off, when i put the conditioner and pass my hands thru my hair i always end up with my hands full of hairs. I get lots of hairs on my shirts and bed. when i look in the mirror i see a bald spot on the crown. I comb my hair down from the middle of my head to cover it but its something that makes me sad. Well, i just wanted to talk, tomorrow im going to see a dermatologist. im 20y old. Thx
hi nick,
i don't have your type of hair but I can point you towards some sources for information that might be helpful: first, take a look at the faqs listed on the page that is linked to by the faq link at the top of the mlhh page.
secondly, get yourself a copy of "Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me" by Paula Begoun. There are several chapters devoted to hair and hair care for different types of hair that are very good.
I have rather curly hair, too, and, while I am not haveing such sever hair dropping, I leave an infuriating trail of hair (my wife so often reminds me) on the bathroom floor. I am not yet at my shoulders, as far as length goes, especially not when it is dry and the curls are tighter.
Some tips:
- I find Anti-Dandruff Shampoos to be harsh. Try something more mild, perhaps.
- NEVER comb your hair when it is dry -- even with a pick, it just tugs and frizzes and breaks a number of hairs. I do, on the rare occassion run a wide-toothed paddle brush through the hair, but only when I am feeling the need for some scalp stimulation, not for styling purposes.
- Use more conditioner than you think you need and don't be over-zealous about rinsing it all out; curls need more care.
- Find an anti-frizz or hair-repair leave-in conditioner: I use göt2be höttie's leave-in hair mender - it smells a bit like piña colada and acts as a anti-frizz agent, too. Great for my hair-type.
- Good for you for actually doing something (seeing a dermatologist) when you are worried about your hair, rather than waiting and avoiding and putting it off. Treatments exist for many conditions.
I wish you all the best, Nick.
Yours in curly Manlock comaderie,
Shawn (Mr.Crow)
