Ok, I posted pictures here like a year ago. However, I consider that my "experimental" attempt at growing it out. I gave myself haircuts -->trimmed the back in attempt to evade the 'awkward phase,' tried different conditioners, washing routines, different combs/brushes, etc etc. Anyway, long story short, I had it cut very short 8 months ago because I felt it was in pretty bad shape (split ends, poorly balanced, everyone told me how bad it looked) from all my 'experimenting.' I think I've learned quite a bit about hair care since then, so I decided to give it another try.
Anyway, I took this photo today. I had a trim 3 months ago, and I plan to have another one probably around Christmas time, or maybe mid November.. I think I want to grow the back out just long enough for it to behave like long hair (i.e. not stick off to the sides like wings when I try to put it behind my ears), and then keep it at that length (I guess probably just above shoulder length) while I wait for the top layers to come down. What do you think of my plan?
p.s. Thanks mlhh! You really got me into jojoba oil, this stuff is amazing!! :)
Don't trim! Just ignore it and let it grow. When it's longer you'll appreciate it.
What do I think? Your plan will fail because you won't allow your hair enough time to grow with trims right and left. Let all grow un-touched for 2 years. The Awkward Stage is impossible to avoid and trims only set you back. You need enough weight so that gravity will hold your hair down. If not long enough this will never happen by itself naturally.
...you need to grow a little longer than your goal length then trim it back to that point, but only then.

thank you very much for your advice! :)
